this was one heck of a fashion party
Michael Kors rocked and rolled
You can kind of compare fashion parties to weddings; all the right ingredients are there (stunning location, everyone suited up, drinks, music) but people never really get wild. At weddings it’s pretty much because the guests list is devised of guests that might have never even met each other. So no one really let’s go and goes all out hanging from chandeliers when they’re standing beside the bride’s mother or grandmother who’s nibbling away at a piece of red velvet.
Same goes for fashion parties. No one knows each other and some people only show up for a brief minute to be able to say that had been there, have a drink, take a snap for Instagram to make it look like you’re having an insane time, to then head straight back to your hotel to do a bit of work before you head off to sleep. That’s just how it goes. Usually.
I had received an invite for the Michael Kors party. Of course I was going to make a short appearance, but when I found out my good friend from the Dutch Vogue Fiona Hering would also be attending, we decided to turn it into a night out in the town. “Should we grab something to drink at my hotel beforehand? And a bite to eat? A girl’s got to eat” she texted me. And then I continued planning my outfit. Fiona was going for a casual look is what I read last minute after I had already put on my colorful Milly dress with pink Dsquared shoes. I was worried I was going to look a bit too over the top next to her, but lucking she was waiting for me wearing a smashing sequin ensemble from Mada van Gaans.
The party was at the Boom Boom Room, a legendary place somewhere high up in the Standard Hotel with the most impeccable view of New York City. This alone was cool enough since the two of us had never been there before. Fiona had even heard that Duran Duran would be performing. Perhaps you weren’t around for much of the eighties but let me tell you, the Duran Duran guys were the kings of my youth. Think Justin Bieber, Pharrel and Beyoncé in one. The lead singer Simon le Bon was (and still is) together with Yasmin le Bon, a former top model, which makes the story even more magical.
Anyway, Fiona and I were off to the Boom Boom Room. With a glass of champagne in my left hand and Kate Upton standing on my right. We were pretty much spending most of our time photographing each other in every corner of the Boom Boom. “I have absolutely no idea where a performance could take place in this room,” I said to Fiona cause the room was packed with people. I even read a day later that Naomi Campbell, Mario Testino, Aerin Lauder, Alessandra Ambrosio and couple of other big names had been there but had I seen them? Nope. That’s how packed it was.
We checked out their roof terrace, took another dozen photos and headed off to the other side of the bar. And that’s where we spotted mic’s. And a tiny stage. We quickly ordered a gin tonic and wine and decided to stay at this magical place.
“Ladies and gentlemen, may we please present… Duran Duran.” They were at touching distance and so there we were, dancing and singing along like two groupies hoping the night would never end.
The following morning I was having breakfast with our editors Liesbeth and Jet and I clearly told them every single detail about the night before, after taking about 7 minutes to tell them all about the men in question and how huge they were back in the day. After which I showed them a photo of Fiona and I front row of the stage. “How cute,” said Jet. “Two cute mothers going wild…”
And that put everything back into perspective. But man, what a party it was. Thank you, Michael. My place next time?
