WhAT to eat

with this heat

Our summer eating habits are different than our winter ones. Well I might only be speaking for myself but I can’t even think about eating a sauerkraut casserole with heavy gravy right now. Especially not when you’re feeling all sticky and sweaty; then I’d rather eat something light. But it has to be nutritious. A lot of trouble you’d think? Well no, cause I’m here to give you some inspiration on what to eat when it’s bloody hot.

Water and wine

It’s good to drink lots of water. Coconut water (if you like) is very hydrating so I can certainly recommend this during a workout.

Alcohol extracts moisture from the body, so not really a thirst quencher. I know that when it’s hot out you drink faster and more wine, just make sure you have a glass of water there as well. Besides, people eat less when it’s hot out. And alcohol effects the stomach three times as hard when it’s empty.  Meaning you’ll feel light headed or get headaches. Just so you know.

Salads

When you’re feeling hot you’re in need of moisture. Choose vegetables and fruit that contain lots of water. Like watermelon for example. This fruit totally rocks and consists of 80% water, very refreshing. For an evening meal you can mix it with feta cheese, a little olive oil and some salt and pepper and you’ve got yourself a super salad. Other options are cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, celery, pineapple, strawberries, peaches and nectarines.

This week I made the most scrumptious Vietnamese salad. It’s a very light meal yet very nutritious. A simple salad just isn’t enough for me and those light glass noodles are nice and filling. Here’s the recipe:

  • 2 filets of grilled chicken
  • a head of romaine lettuce
  • 150 gr grates carrots
  • a cucumber
  • a mango
  • 100 gr glass noodles
  • 2 spring onions
  • sprig of mint
  • 100 gr unsalted cashew nuts
  • 3 limes
  • 5 tablespoons of water
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • Half a chili pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons of fish sauce
  • olive oil
  •  salt & pepper and
  •  maybe some spicy paprika powder & Sriracha saus.

Wash and cut the lettuce and vegetables, remove the seed lining from the cucumber and the chili peppers. Make a salad dressing out of the limes, water, sugar, sesame oil, chili peppers and fish sauce. Mix the other ingredients in a big bowl and add the cooked noodles and chicken, then hustle again and dress it up with the sauce. Leave it to marinate for a while.

Cool runnings

Make your own popsicles. Blend fruit into a puree, add some water and for the tinkerer a little agave syrup. Pour it into a Popsicle or ice cube tray and ice it for a few hours.

When it’s warm outside you prefer cold food but you can also try some spicy recipes. They eat a lot of spicy food in warm countries. It speeds up the blood circulation and makes you sweat. This sweating cools down your body.

Lastly, I’m also a big fan of cold soups. Gazpacho for example. So very easy to make. This is a great recipe. Jamie’s of course.
