THE RIGHT TOOLS

– WHEN TO USE WHAT MAKEUP BRUSH –

Different makeup artists have already whispered into our ears that we get better results applying makeup if we use brushes. So with the right brushes you can bring out the best in you. Still there are so many of them it can be a bit of a hiccup figuring out which brush to use for what. So, I’ll tell you. Miss Josselin at your service. This way you’ll finally know what brushes are considered standard equipment and how to use them.

A foundation brush is round but flat, the hairs are extremely soft so you can evenly distribute the foundation. Especially on rounded places like the nose and eyebrow

1. Pinceau fond de teint, nr. 6, € 36,95, CHANEL

2. Foundation brush, € 26, Benefit

You apply transparent powder with a big brush. As big as possible. You want to apply an invisible extra layer to your skin to fixate the foundation. By using a big brush you apply the powder evenly preventing buildups on certain spots.

3. Powder brush light cover, € 63,90, Dior

A highlighting brush has a curved angle. Often made from a combination of synthetic and natural hairs suited for perfect application. It’s meant to highlight certain areas of the face; a bronzer on the cheekbones or bring a glow to your nose. De brush controls the amount of powder applied, not overdoing it (unless you have a lot on the brush) creating a natural effect with the rest of your makeup.

4. Brush, € 17,50, Smashbox

For blush you need a good brush. Especially with a cream blush it’s important to blend it well into the skin or you’ll get strange lines. A good blush brush isn’t big, it’s bulb-shaped and you use to make small circular movements for an even effect.

5. Sheer powder brush, € 45, Bobbi Brown

For your eyes you need lots of brushes but for me two are essential. The one is a little brush to apply eyeshadow and makes small and large strokes. Perfect for smokey eyes. The other an eyeliner brush, very handy. It might take some practice but once you’ve got the hang of it you can make beautiful tight lines.

6. Angle Eye shadow brush, € 30,50, Bobbi Brown

7. Precise Eye Liner, € 22, MAC Cosmetics

For the eyebrows you need two very important tools. The first is a soft brush. The eyebrow brush has soft hairs and is cut at an angle. It enables you to draw thin lines on your eyebrows reproducing the natural effect. Then there’s a sturdy brush to brush them into shape, a must-have. Carry one with you in your bag during the day, always comes in handy.

8. Pinceau Sourcils Biseauté 12, € 24,95, CHANEL

9. Eyebrow brush, € 8,95, Leco Brushes

And here is the tip of tips. Hardly anybody does it but it’s important. Clean your brushes frequently. Brushes get dirty, makeup clings on causing impurities on your face. Besides you get the best and most smooth results if you use clean brushes.
