4 x healthy treats for your kids to hand out at school

May-Britt spent the past week with her hands full of candy strips, cherry shaped candy and a bunch of other things that will make any sweet tooth drool. Candy roses were made, skewers were decorated and candy necklaces were assembled. You only turn 7 once.

May-Britt was almost nauseous from the hefty amount of Haribo bags in her shopping cart and it was close to impossible to clear her kitchen floor from the access amount of sugar. However, this happens to be a part of the process when you’re making treats for your kid to hand out at school: as sweet as possible with sugar, but May-Britt still asked me if I could give her a couple of healthier varieties that are still festive and sweet. Perhaps useful the next time a birthday comes around, because she happens to have three very sweet little girls.

Fruit skewer

Get your hands on some decorated skewers. You know, the kind that often gets used to decorate ice cream. Add a slice of an apple, a grape, melon, blue berries or whatever you like onto them. Finish it off with a slice of watermelon in the shape of a triangle. A strawberry works too. Voila, a very healthy fruit skewer.

Carrot muffins

You don’t have to inform any of the kids that you used carrots. You can even decorate these with colored sprinkles or other colored candy. Use a bit of honey as glue.

What you need for 12 muffins:

6 eggs

300 grams of almond flour

1 tablespoon of baking powder

150 grams of rasped carrots

75 grams of raisins

120 ml coconut oil

4 tablespoons of agave syrup

1 tablespoon of mixed cookie spices

a pinch of salt

How to make it:

Heat up your oven to 175 degrees. Let the raisins soak in luke warm water. Mix the eggs in a bowl. Add the almond flour, the mixed cookie spices, the agave syrup, the baking powder and salt. Drain the raisins and then add them and the rasped carrot to the batter. Melt the coconut oil in a pan and add the batter into it. Now you can add it into the muffin molds. Put them in the oven for 20 minutes. Let them cool off and decorate them if you like.

Banana/chocolate skewer

Chop the banana into small slices and dip it into melted chocolate. Tastes so good. Add them onto a skewer and add some other fruit in between. It’ll look very festive. You could also opt to only use bananas; this will make it look more like a fruit Popsicle.

Vegetable chips

Try and get your hands on cute little bags (perhaps with a cool red-white blocked print) and fill it with vegetable chips. Here is how you can make it:

This is what you need:

1 medium sized carrot

1 medium sized parsnip

1 big beetroot (uncooked)

1 small sweet potato (uncooked)

Sea salt

Olive oil

How to make it:

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees.

Wash all of your vegetables (leave the peels on). Use a mandolin to make thin slices of all of the vegetables. This is crucial, or else they wont become crunchy. Place your slices of vegetables onto a baking tray covered in parchment paper. Sprinkle a bit of olive oil onto them and some pinches of salt. Put it in the over and bake it for 15 to 20 minutes until they become crunchy. Let them cool off and then serve them. Add another pinch of salt if you want to.

Is this going to help you out for your next round of birthday treats May-Britt?
