4 X WINES FOR DIFFERENT MOODS

Hey summer. You’ve got us hopping into our favorite dresses, racing to terraces, organizing barbecues or hanging out on boats. And we’re all in the mood for a great glass of cold white wine. If you’re wondering which bottle to opt for when the weather is nice out, then I’d definitely give this a read if I were you.

I recently contacted Milton Verseput (one of the best sommeliers in the Netherlands) to tell us all about ’the best wines when it’s hot out’. From affordable to a tad more expensive when you’ve got something to celebrate. Milton, take it away!

The quick salad after work because I’ve got work tomorrow-wine

Grüner Veltliner Weinviertel DAC 2015, “Ingrid Groiss” €10,30 Austria

‘This Austrian lady tastes like wines that are easier to drink, but it also contains a lot of complexity and excitement. Delicious acidity and tones of pear and yellow fruit are things you’ll taste. The concentration of the wine is at a good level so don’t shy away from pairing it with feta chefs or spicy herbs in your salad. Just be aware that once glass of this wine is going to taste like more and you have to work tomorrow, right?’

The sun is shining but I’ve had a pretty shit day and could use a pick me up-wine

Thorne and Daugters Rocking Horse 2015, €20,95 South Africa

‘This South African wine from Thorne and Daughters is a high recommendation. A wine that is made up of Roussanne, Semillon blacn, Chardonnay, Chenin blanc and Clairette blanche. It’s an orchestra of grapes that work perfectly well together and are balanced. This wine contains a ripe peach and something exotic, but gossamer acids.’

”From affordable to a tad more expensive when you’ve got something to celebrate’

It’s Friday, the sun is out and I’ve got something to celebrate so I’m ordering sushi-wine

Bizkaiko Txakolina 2014, Gorka Izagirre €14,25

‘The pronunciation of this one might be a tongue twister: biskijko tjakolina. The Gorka Izagiree wines are made in a very steep vineyard with salty sea air. This wine suits the Bask kitchen: fresh seafood. The grape sorts are Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia. But it’s okay if you don’t remember them. Try this wine though. You’ll taste a fresh apple cider, citrus, saltiness and a tiny bit oily. Tastes good and is very refined. Where is the sushi?’

I’ve been invited to a BBQ in the park so will be drinking out of a plastic cup-wine

Matetic EQ Pinot Noir 2013, Chili €28,50

‘Okay, this is wine that you shouldn’t drink out of a plastic cup, but if you are going to do it, at least do it the right way. And if you’re going to go to a BBQ, why not drink red? Matetic EQ comes from the San Antonio Valley, Chili. EQ stands for equilibrium which is Spanish for balance. Serve this wine a little chilled, at around 14 or 15 degree celsius. It works well with meats, but also with salads and fish. And if it doesn’t work well with fish, then at least you’ve got a wine that works well on its own too. It’s got a very soft tannin structure, it’s a ripe red and contains an aromatic fruit. And that fruit is something that comes out even more when the wine is chilled.’
