7 NAMes parents should have thought twice about
I know, picking out a name for your kid is extremely hard. Do you want to go for something that works in your own language or one that you don’t have to explain to others when you’re abroad? I’m happy with the one my parents gave me, but there have been times I considered using my middle name Kristen because I was extremely tired of always having to spell it out. Or I would change it up a bit. Nowadays, I listen to almost everything, from Megan to Meredith, or I’ll just shorten it to an easier May or Britt.
My name might be difficult for some or perhaps odd, but as far as I know, it doesn’t have any obscene connotation like many other names do. Tips for parents to be; think about what you’re saddling your kid up with. It might sound good where you’re from, but it might mean something entirely different somewhere else.
Kiki
Lets start off with our very own Kiki. In most countries her name is considered a happy and cheerful one, but when you live in Spain, you might want to introduce yourself as Catherine. Why? Simple put, Kiki means a ‘quickie’.
Nada
Another beautiful name, but in Italian it means ‘nothing’.
Nemo
A college friend of mine called her kid Nemo, after captain Nemo. She liked the idea that her son would be the captain of his own life. It wasn’t until the birth cards were printed that she realized that the name Nemo means ‘nothing’ in Latin.
Fanny
Cheerful name right. And it is, so cheerful that in the States and the UK it’s a nickname for vajayjays.
“It wasn’t until the birth cards were printed that she realized that the name Nemo means ‘nothing’ in Latin.”
Blaze
Our favorite hair dresser gave her daughter this name, and it’s definitely a cool on and suits her, but for those of you who did not yet know, ’to blaze’ is another way of describing smoking a joint.
Dick
A definite golden oldie also known as the nickname for the name Richard. But no matter which way you turn it, ‘dick’ is and will forever be the name for a, well, you know.
Isis
This used to be considered a very beautiful name but over the past couple a years, it has understandably turned into a name that is rather complicated.
Then there’s also still the phenomenon known as last names. Besides the whole first and last name matching (remember Joe King and Justin Case), some people have last names that can work against them. There’s an actress in the Netherlands called Abbey Hoes. Completely fine in the country she’s from, but I don’t know whether Hollywood would be thrilled when someone has a last name which means ‘hookers’.
Nobody said it would be fun guys, nor easy.
