7 things you need to know about the Met Gala

As we speak, pretty much all of Hollywood is doing one thing. Getting ready for the biggest fashion event of the year of course: the Met Gala, aka the ‘Super Bowl of the fashion industry’ which’ll be taking place in New York tonight.

My god, I can’t wait to see all the hilarious gifs, designer dresses and iconic group selfies that are going to fill up my Instagram account. But about the Met Gala, there’s more to it than just the clothes. Here are the 7 things you need to know:

1. The Met Gala is almost 70 years old

The first gala was organized in 1948 and every year since then, it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

2. Anna Wintour has been the co-chair since 1995

Vogue’s editor in chief Anna Wintour has been responsible for the past 21 events. And she’s a tough cookie: if you aren’t cool, you aren’t invited. Basta.

3. Each year co-chair and honorary members are selected to attend the event

Besides Anna Wintour, other co-chairs this year are Taylor Swift, Idris Elba and Apple’s head designer Johnathan Ive. Nicolas Gherquière, Karl Lagerfeld and Miuccia Prada all have their own honorable guests seats.

4. The Met Gala celebrated the opening of a new exposition

The Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute’s newest exposition to be exact. Filled with 35 thousand items of clothing and accessories from the past seven centuries.

5. Every year the exposition has a theme which inspires the dress code for the event

Last year it was “China: Through The Looking Glass”, this year it’s ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’. What the hell is that supposed to mean? I’m guessing there’s going to be a whole lot of silver and futuristic robot looks walking up that Met staircase.

6. A shitload of money gets harked in during the gala every year

According to the New York Times, the ball has made more than 145 million dollars for the Costume Institute since 1995. Not bad.

7. Celebs and designers form some kind of alliance for the event

Because you obviously don’t count if you don’t have a creation on that a designer has made specially for you. In the past, Selena Gomez and Vera Wang formed a couple, Blake Lively and Karl Lagerfeld and Cara Delevingne and Stella McCartney.
