A NICE AND TIDY MAKEUP SHELF IN YOUR BATHROOM
The tips & tricks
Considering I work as Amayzine’s beauty editor, you probably assume that I’m a complete neat freak and I’ve got all my products perfectly lined up at home. Well, I hate to break it to you, but I don’t. My bathroom is probably just as messy as most peoples and unfortunately I can’t place the blame on my boyfriend because he hardly has enough room to store his perfume, deodorant and day cream. I’ve got the products I use on a daily basis all neatly lined up in the front of my shelf, but everything behind it is just a huge pile of beauty clutter.
If you love makeup as much as I do, this problem most likely sounds familiar. There are so many products available in practically every color and the harsh truth is; our collections are over the top and we don’t need over half of the things we have. But admitting to it? Never. So I decided it was time to tidy up my cluttered shelves and rearrange everything. Result: a clutter-free bathroom. Here’s how I pulled it off:
Storage
Divide your beauty products into two groups; products you use daily and those that you don’t. Make sure that everything you do use regularly is within close reach – your day cream, everyday mascara and favorite foundation, etc. Then there are the products you use when you’ve got an event or party to attend. Think highlighters, glam bronzers and eye shadow palettes. Make sure these are all in a separate bag so they’ll be easy to locate. Now hopefully what you are left with is a makeup bag full of daily products, and one for special events.
Dividers
I love storage containers, but in my case, they’re not really effective. Once I’ve taken something out of it, I don’t put it back in the same orderly fashion. So it’s best to go for storage containers without lids; aka dividers. Divide and categorize your beauty products inside containers to keep them tidy and clean. Eyeliners with eyeliners, mascaras with mascaras, etc. You can even label the container or divider to ensure that you’ll put it back exactly where it belongs.
”This way you’ll have all of your brushes in plain sight”
Brush holders
In my cleaning rant I stored away my brushes in the same orderly fashion as described above. The only problem is that the small brushes disappeared from sight because of all the big brushes on top. The perfect tip (which I found online): put coffee beans in the container. This way you can stick your brushes in an upright position so you have all of them in plain sight.
Magnets
Another handy tip I found online was to use magnets. If you use a magnetic shelf, your blushes, bronzers and eyeliners will just stick in place – and at reach. It also looks pretty fun and moodboard-worthy at the same time (oh, and another added bonus is that you can just work your way up the walls once your shelves are full).
Hang it up
Another way to organize your things is by hanging it all up. It’s perfect for when you have a small bathroom and your shelves won’t look cluttered. Want to go all out? Add containers with photos onto your hanging storage system.
Boxes 3.0
Most makeup boxes are too pretty to throw out. It’s such a waste, heartbreaking even, when you throw out that adorable little Chanel box. So don’t. Save it. What better place to store your jewelry or business cards than in that little Chanel eyeshadow palette box? Just make sure not to keep these in your bathroom…
