HOW TO FEEL LIKE A NEW YORKER IN AMSTERDAM
Starbucks in the city
Last year I was in New York for Amayzine and even though it was about negative twenty degrees out, we had to leave our house for appointments in the city. This meant we would also make plenty of pitstops at Starbucks to warm back up. I always thought this was the coolest things ever. Back home in the Netherlands I wouldn’t go to Starbucks too often, but when I was in NY, I had the urge to not only warm up, but to feel like the ultimate New Yorker too.
I also thought it was extremely cool that our lifestyle editor go out and run early in the morning too (while I snoozed in bed) only to show up at our doorstep with a tray full of Starbucks cups afterwards. Even when we were hanging out at the kitchen table I could feel enthused. Plus, it meant I could stay inside and write and wouldn’t have to head out into the cold.
“If you don’t have a Starbucks in your neighborhood, don’t panic: you can get your hands on these in your local grocery store”
Long story short. That New York trip was more than a year ago, but ever since, I’ve made trips to Starbucks far more often back home. Not to warm up (Thank God negative twenty is not something that ever really happens in the Netherlands) but just to embrace that New York vibe. To then walk (as the New Yorkers do) through the streets with a Starbucks cup in hand. Or, when you’re in a bit of a rush, racewalk home (what New Yorkers also do) to drink it at my office at home.
Personally I’m not a massive coffee drinker. The smell is divine, but the taste isn’t completely my thing. That was until I discovered these chilled coffees, the Chilled Classics, from Starbucks. They look cute and they taste great too. Even if you aren’t as big of a coffee addict as others. Take the Caffè Americano for example, it tastes like coffee (evidently) with a fans of sugar and milk – and it’s nice and cold – which immediately turns it into a quick feast throughout your day. If you don’t have a Starbucks in your neighborhood, don’t panic: you can get your hands on these in your local grocery store dairy shelf. This way you can always throw one in your bag to sip on whenever and wherever you please. In New York, Amsterdam, or any suburb you might live in.
