6 X HOW TO GET OUT OF A RUT
“May-Britt is it okay if I take the day off tomorrow?” One of our dearest colleagues who shall remain nameless was going through a bit of a rut in her life.
She was either working, or cooking, or doing laundry or unloading the dishwasher for the millionth time. Completely and utterly civil is how she described it. She used to go out from time to time and now could hardly find the energy to do so.
When you’ve got a job and you’ve given birth to a couple of kids, this might sound all too familiar. There’s so much you need to take care of that you can hardly find any time for yourself. Luckily, I’ve got press trips every now and then that allow me to actually spend some time laying out by the pool. But when you don’t, life can catch up to you and get very boring. So here’s what’s going to save you.
1. Take a day off
Which is what my colleague did. Drop your kids off at your in-laws (or your own folks) or spend some extra cash on a sitter for an entire night (preferably evening too) and you’ve got an entire day to relax. If I could give you a bit of advice, do this on a Monday. Monday’s are somehow always a great day to take off.
2. Go to a spa
If I want to treat myself to some quality R&R, I book an appointment at a spa. Spend 15 minutes swimming in the pool, then hang out in the jacuzzi and then get heated up in the hammam. Just lay out horizontally on one of their beds and who knows, you might even catch yourself taking a quick nap.
3. Have lunch with a glass of wine
Invite that friend of yours you haven’t seen in a while and tell the waiter to bring you two some glasses of bubbly. Surprise her with it, because if you ask her she’ll come up with a list of excuses why not to do it.
4. Go to the movies during the day
One of the best feelings in the world, besides buying a Chanel bag in Paris, is heading to the movies during the day. Wait, scratch that: going to the movies during the week. Alone. And every now and then, think about your poor colleagues who are stuck on the line with a conference call from Düsseldorf or so.
5. Buy an expensive bouquet of flowers
It’s easy to opt for a simple bouquet or roses or tulips and if they make you happy then go for it. But it’s okay to spend a little bit of extra money and buy that one design bouquet (plus they’ll last longer) and why not buy something permanent too? A plaid, a vase, a candle. Anything is possible.
6. Plan a date night with your man
Don’t meet up at home and grab a cab together. No. Meet up at a restaurant, just like you did when you started dating. Trust me, it’s exciting.
FYI: It is forbidden to do anything useful on your day off or buy things for you kids. Got it?
