This hack is going to help you get over your iphone addiction in a second

I’ve tried to beat it, but I caved and have to say, I’m addicted to my iPhone. Yes, you are too. And don’t say you aren’t, because you are. I see you. I see us. On the terrace, in the train, on our bikes (!), in the car (!), in the grocery store, in the restaurant: we stare and state and tick and scroll. We go from Facebook to Instagram to Snapchat to our e-mail to WhatsApp to a news app to a weather app to Pinterest and back. Everything that happens around us is a blur – and isn’t that actually quite disappointing?

When I go out to dinner, I always have to interrupt eating to take a photo of my food. When I’m camping, I have to take a photo of my new veranda and upload it onto Facebook instead of relaxing. When I’m on my bike, I’ll check my mail. Or the weather. Or Instagram. It’s an urge of mine, something I can’t control. Oh, and this one is bad too: when I have to head abroad for work and I’m alone in my hotel room at night, I find comfort in knowing I’ve got my iPhone beside me. I even consider it cozy, that thing and I in bed together. Like, why?

“But after being awake for barely five minutes, I’ve already gone through my whole Facebook-Instagram-WhatsApp riddle”

Everyday I tell myself I’m going to start limiting my time on my iPhone. And every morning I wake up in good spirits. But after being awake for barely five minutes, I’ve already gone through my whole Facebook-Instagram-WhatsApp riddle. As a true addict, I delay rehab another day. Tomorrow I’ll be able to do it. Tomorrow I will do it. And that’s how it goes every month. Until I read this message on  Marieclaire.co.uk last week. James Hamblin, editor of The Atlantic, has found the perfect hack to get rid of your iPhone addiction. Here it is (insert drumroll please): turn your iPhone screen to grey.

Settings – General – Accessibility – Greyscale – ON

The theory behind this trick is that you’ll no longer see all the red warning icons (when you have mail or messages). Well, you’ll still see them, but in grey rather than in red. This has less of an inciting effect. As in: there won’t be an addictive adrenaline rush. The view on your phone will be a lot more boring which will make you less likely to use it. And I can tell you: it works. I’ve kept mine of the greyscale for a couple of days now and it’s starting to feel like some sort odd relief when I look at my phone. Usually I’m always tempted to look, but now that I’m on my phone a lot less, I’m more focused on the here and now. But, I have to say it: Facebook and Instagram are unbelievably boring in black and white. Several times I’ve heard an inner compelling bad voice telling me to turn off that greyscale. But as of now, I have yet to do it which has resulted in a whole lot more freedom. I want to take the time to ‘reset’ myself. And besides, I’m currently being very hip because they say that offline life is apparently the new luxury. And no one ever says no to a bit of luxury, right?
