TRAVELING FOR FREE (SORT OF): THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT

Traveling the world for just a dime. Yaaassss, that’s what we’re all looking for. Although it’s a little trickier when your last name isn’t Kardashian. But don’t worry, it’s slightly easier than you might think. Here are a couple of ways to help you see a little more of the planet.

Home swap

Spending the night in someone else’s house instead of in an expensive hotel? Just swap homes with someone else who’s looking to go on a vacation. Home swaps are booming and a cheap way to stay in a different location.

Thumbs up

I’m talking about hitchhiking. My most exciting mini break ever was when a friend and I hitchhiked from Amsterdam to Berlin. It’s surprising how many people you meet along the way and how many people actually stop to pick up a hitchhiker. Gas stations, bus stops and toll roads are great ways to stick that thumb of yours up in the air. Make sure you’ve got good shoes one though. This technique of travel might take longer than others, but it’s worth the experience. Just make sure you never do it alone.

Camping

Give that one family member or neighbor your sweetest puppy dog face and think of a good exchange to borrow his or her tent or camper for a road trip. There are plenty of places (the beach for example) where you can go camping; Ireland, England, Portugal and Mexico amongst a few. Extremely cool and extremely Instagrammable.

Always worth a shot. Especially when you’re traveling on your own.

Working abroad

So uhm, this one wasn’t entirely what I meant when I was talking about traveling. But picture this, you want to travel through Asia for a year, why not spend some time working and then expand your trip to say, Australia too? Those hours you spend working as an au pair, plucking apples, working as a tour guide, you name it. It’s worth it.

Charity work

Got some time off for an experience you’re never going to forger? Go and do some charity work. There are numerous places all over the world looking for people to lend a helping hand in exchange for a flight ticket and a place to crash. Bon voyage!
