Seated behind Becks in the second row?
6 x how to make the most of it
I recall once during Amsterdam Fashion Week when a photographer joyfully made his way over to where I was seated next to a popular Dutch model. If I could please scoot over. So I wouldn’t be in his shot.
I would have preferred if he had opened a hatch in the ground for me to sink into than this unbelievably awkward moment. I even once had Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist aka the world’s most famous street style photographer) once tapped me on the shoulder in a cafe in Milan right across from the Dolce & Gabbana show venue. I knew what was coming, I sat up straight, gave my blue Birkin from Hermès a prominent place on the bar stool next to me and kept my mouth shut. Another tap on the shoulder. He was interested in the stack of packs of sugar next to me. Not me.
Photographing and being photographed, that’s what it’s all about during fashion weeks. There is one thing worse than being asked to move out of someone’s camera frame and that is sitting behind an A-lister and nobody asks you anything. That you’re snapped in the background getting rid of that food residue that’s been stuck between your teeth. And that is the photo that happens to be seen by the ten million followers of the celeb in front of you. I once took a photo of Grace Coddington and beside her was another Dutch fashion journalist who didn’t look too flattering on the photo. So I decided to delete it. With a pain in my heart.
So incase you happen to be seated behind Beyoncé, or okay Anna Wintour, then make the most of it and act accordingly.
1. Keep your cool, don’t act impressed
You could look like the biggest loser ever if you aren’t careful. Just continue along texting your friends like it’s no big deal and that you totally belong there.
2. Look down
Always the best look for photos. There’s a reason everyone does it in their Instagram photos. Even if you’ve got insane bags under your eyes from all the jet lag and your makeup doesn’t look like it did 7 hours ago because of the snow in NY, then the casually looking at the floor look is the way to go.
3. Dive deep into the WWD
At every show you always have happy-go-lucky fashion girls handing out the Womens Wear Daily. Usually you smile and say no thanks cause you don’t want to carry that thing around but avoiding photo wise, it’s a great idea to grab one anyway. As soon as there is a camera in sight, you can pretend like your in the middle of an extremely interesting article.
4. Study your invite
Another way to make yourself invisible…
5. Attack
Make history by giving the celeb in front of you some bunny ears. Odds are you’ll be pulled out of the show by bodyguards but hey, you’ll always have the photos.
6. Snap a selfie
If you’re uncomfortable regardless, then you might as well make the best of it. Stick your head out and say: May I? Just wait until after the show to send the photo to your friends, understood?
