EVERYDAY SEXISM
It will undoubtedly all be just me, but it happens more often than I would like. I wind up in a heated discussion with a man about the severity of sexism. Too many men think it’s easy to just say “I’m sure it’s not all that bad” and that “nowadays everyone is way more emancipated.” Well, let me tell ya; the world still has a long way to go.
Because girls are still pink, boys are still blue. Girls like makeup, boys like hunting things. A girl waits for her prince, the guy is the prince. And so on. Generally, it’s easy to say that females have been given a cautious role in media whereas males get a conquering one and that is something I find terribly admissive. You don’t only notice it in toys for kids, but it is something that is addressed in the grown up world too.
Anytime a woman gets a ‘man’s job’, men get so agitated. Last year Shell announced that a woman would be their new president-director. Marjan van Loon is her name and I recall a Dutch newspaper article which had the following title “Marjan runs Shell and family without any stress.” The entire article pretty much talked about how nice (!) she is and how she combines work and a family. Have you ever read anything about a male CEO and how great it is that he has kids?
Luckily there are more women out there that are as annoyed by this as I am. Some of the worlds funniest women have been calling out sexism in Hollywood. Think Lena Dunham. Think Amy Schumer. Think Tracee Ellis Ross. And who knows, maybe if a country like the States ends up with a female president we’ll finally enter an era in which people (men in general) will realize we’re all equal. That’ll teach ‘em.
