STOP SAYING ‘THANK GOD, IT’S FRIDAY’
Tomorrow is Friday. Which means you’ve got one day left before the weekend finally kicks in. It also means that your Facebook, Twitter and Instagram timeline are going to be filled with “TGIF’s” and “We’re done for the week!” messages. Every. Single. Week. And every time I see it, I can’t help but cringe. Exactly how miserable is everyone to have to post this every Friday?
It often starts on a Wednesday. You’ll hear stuff like “happy hump day” and “Friday’s closer than Monday”. On Friday’s people stare at their clocks waiting for it strike 5 to welcome the weekend. Two whole days off. Two days in which you can relax and do fun things, but you also have to take care of boring chores such as grocery shopping, finances and everything else you don’t have time for during the week.
“I get that it must be extremely boring to spend your days somewhere that lacks any form of inspiration”
Let’s be honest, if you’re THAT relieved that the weekend has finally arrived, then are you sure you’ve got the right job? I know this might be a very privileged and elite thing to say and not to mention, aren’t you responsible for your own happiness? Not everyone is lucky enough to do what makes them happy, I know, I’ve been there, but you’ve got bills to pay and mouths to feed so sometimes crappy jobs are a must.
And sometimes they aren’t. Sometimes people just stick to jobs they’ve had for years without ever considering a different career path. One that would make them happier. The whole “I only do things I like” mentality is a very generation X way of thinking and some might feel like this has a negative ring to it. But I don’t. I think it’s a great attitude to have.
I’m very fortunate that I get to do what I love to pay my bills and I get that it must be extremely boring to spend your days somewhere that lacks any form of inspiration, surrounded by stacks of nothing but paper. In those cases, it’s a natural feeling to long for the weekend. However, the funny thing is, that it’s exactly those people who find it necessary to degrade today’s youth and complain that we don’t take life seriously enough by only doing what we love.
What I’m trying to say is this. Look for something that makes you happy, even if it’s only something small. Work your ass off to make it happen so you won’t be spending five days a week waiting for the final two. Stop downgrading the five and do fun stuff on weekdays as well as in the weekend. Make all seven days count. Life is too short to waste your time.
