THE SHOES THAT’VE GOT EVERYONE TALKING
And May-Britt had to have them
I have a lot of theory’s that I strategically use when I want to justify an expensive purchase (well expensive, what is expensive anyway?).
One of these theories is my spend-more-money-on-flats-theory. Look, shoes with heels have had it easy since the get go. But if you’re born a flat, you have the tendency to become dull quickly.
Voila, my plea for expensive flats that’ll seduce you with their beauty and make you leave those brand new Choo’s behind. This is also the reason I have two pairs of Chanel espadrilles. An extremely smart purchase because it’ll upgrade any simple beach look with cut off jeans and a t-shirt.
Or my Gucci sandals. My initial thought was: pretty expensive for sandals, but little did I know. They’re made out of the classic Gucci fabric (inspired by the canal underneath the horses saddle and not because Guccio Gucci was into horses himself, he knew his rich clientele found horses very chic) and the classic horse bit has been applied to the design so subtly for an instant chic factor and so I wore almost nothing else on my feet last summer. Besides, it was nice to move forward instead of always walking up for a change and my love that he didn’t have to walk around as my support system keeping me up right due to the combo if Italian tiles and my killer heels who took their nickname very literally.
And then I saw Lizzy van der Ligt and her super cute Miu Miu ballet flats and I knew what I was up for. Buy them. They might cost a serious 550 euros (something I was almost too terrified to say out loud to my love), but they were flat and à la mode, so every euro could be justified. Plus, they were also screaming my name since when I was little, I would spend more hours in pointe shoes than at a bar, so these shoes were also a great reference of what I (once) was.
The shoes were delivered (after a very stressful situation which you can read about here – it had something to do with my age) and I put them on immediately. All the fashion girls at our office applauded and even my own man understood. Then they had to be hazed by the mothers at my kids’ school. No applause here. One woman came up to me and asked me whether or not ‘I was aware that I still had my ballet shoes on’. I told my fashion mother Harriet Calo the outcome of all the reactions and as always she gave me some redeeming words of wisdom. “Fashion is always about having at least one person who doesn’t get it.”
See. Great purchase.
