What i wish i had learned in school

I never scored higher than a C in math. What do I care about Pi, or how many feet of wooden fences are needed to surround a 20 by 30 acre property, or how many oranges Tim can buy from his three week allowance? I’ve spent so much of my precious teenage years cramming to learn about all this kind of crap, only to find out I won’t ever be using it in real life. There are so many other things I wish I had been taught back in high school and if schools nowadays are clever, they might want to change their courses and the world will end up with way more smart and responsible citizens.

Taxes

I had a tiny issue with the IRS the other day. Something to do with lost receipts or something or other. And I received a letter that it was time for my annual return. At least that’s what I think it said. I’m not too good at deciphering their letters. I wish I was taught the basics of taxes and administration so I wouldn’t make such an utter and complete mess out of it every time. But nope, apparently school thought it was more important to measure fictional properties.

Health insurance

Does anyone understand the concept of a health insurance? I sure as hell don’t. A certain amount of money is either added or taken from my bank account each month I believe, and if I break something, I don’t have to pay for it. Well doesn’t that sound dandy. But the other day I had to pay for something which my doctor ensured me would be covered by my insurance. All I had to do was “fill in a form.” Riiiight, OK. Which form? And where the heck can I find it? And how do I fill it in? AND WHERE IS IT SUPPOSED TO GO?! So I ended up paying for it myself.

Mortgage

I bought a house eight years ago which I love; the mortgage, not so much. There’s some kind of interest that you can deduct from your salary and vice versa, but how and why – I have absolutely no idea. And then you hear someone say that you should refinance your mortgage for a better interest rate every once in a while, I just find myself nodding along although my mind has long drifted elsewhere and I find myself calculating how much money Tim has to loan in order to buy oranges from his allowance each month for the rest of his life.

Leaks

Even just learning the basics of how to fix any leaks or other defects in a house would have sufficed. It would save me so much hassle with handymen and carpenters.

Returning packages

Okay, so you can call this one of my occupational disabilities. I have absolutely no idea how to send back something I purchased online. To be honest, I’ve never really researched the How To’s in great depth, but it’s down right complicated. I never send anything that doesn’t fit back because I can’t make any sense out of their FAQ’s so I basically end up with a closet full of bad bargains.

Thanks, school.
