WHAT WE HAVE IN COMMON WITH POLITICS

Generally speaking, we try to steer clear of politics here on Amayzine since our worlds don’t necessarily collide. That was until we heard the following and were surprised to find that in fact, we do have one thing in common.

The French president Hollande recently had a diplomatic lunch planned with the Iranian president Rohani, however there was some difficulty in organizing a meal that was halal and alcohol free and French. As in: having absolutely no wine at the table goes against the Republican values and the French pertinently refused to ditch the wine and cancelled the lunch altogether.

The initial idea was to meet up at a fancy restaurant in Paris, but obviously the Iranians asked for a place that would offer halal and an alcohol free meal, whereas the French government insisted on going somewhere with a traditional French kitchen. Wine included. Long story short: this was destined to fail. The idea of having breakfast was also thrown into the loop but that option was too mediocre for both parties. Think: before heading off the Paris, Rohani was in Italy where every statue of a naked body had been neatly covered and he left after closing in on business deals with quite the number of 0’s.

But Hollande, Hollande gives zero fucks, and refuses to have lunch without any wine. I have a hunch he’s not all too popular amongst the French, but it’s this kind of behavior that secretly warms my heart. Regardless of the fact that politics can be very tiresome, can you imagine having lunch without wine?! I mean come one, no wine? What has the world come to?
