IT’S BEEN PROVEN: YOUR SELFIES ARE LESS ATTRACTIVE THAN YOU THINK

Five minutes. That’s how long your Amayzine editors usually take to make a decent Instagram post or take a selfie. Especially the perfect selfie remains god damn difficult. May-Britt just mentioned how her selfies always fail and our lifestyle editor Jet is more on team ‘duo’.

Sometimes I think I’ve finally snapped a great selfie but then I’ll leave it on my phone for another day just to make sure. Only to then think ‘whatdahell was I thinking?’ the following morning. Taking a photo of yourself is much harder than spending an entire day parading around in Louboutin heels. But luckily it’s been proven: selfies are overrated.  Selfies happen to make you less attractive than you actually are.

The University of Toronto research the psychology behind the selfie. Hundreds of participants viewed their own selfies and were allowed to judge how well they thought it would score on social media. Then 178 strangers were also asked to judge the photos. The result? All the selfie makers had estimated higher outcomes than the strangers had actually given them. Better yet, most of the selfies were marked down as unattractive and even a bit narcissistic.

Well, now you know what you’re in for. The next time you’ve got a perfect hair day, let someone else take a photo of you. It’ll make you more sympathetic and you’ll score more likes. Win-win situation, guys.
