It’s been a long time since I’ve been this hooked on a series like The Summer I Turned Pretty. The creators at Amazon Prime are cleverly feeding the binge-craving viewers like me – and there are many of us – by dropping a new episode every Wednesday. The result? We spend six days wagging and drooling in anticipation for our next fix of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah. In the meantime, we ask each other whether we’re Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah.

The Summer I Turned Pretty for beginners

The series, based on the books by Jenny Han, revolves around the love triangle between main character Belly (played by Lola Tung) and the brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno).

As a little girl, Belly spent every summer in the beach house (which will now also become your dream house, trust me) in Cousins. The house belongs to Susannah, the best friend of Belly’s mother Laurel. Susannah has two sons: Jeremiah and Conrad. And Belly has a major crush on both – and they on her. After a relationship with Conrad, she eventually ends up with Jeremiah, with whom she suddenly wants to get married very quickly.

Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah?

That’s *the* question now that the series is heading towards the finale. Jeremiah has proposed to Belly and the pedal to the wedding altar is being slammed. As a viewer, you wonder where this rush is coming from: they’re young, they have their whole lives ahead of them. Yet both Belly and Jeremiah feel that once they’re married, the door to Conrad will be closed forever.

But then – SPOILER ALERT – everything starts to fall apart. During Jeremiah’s bachelor party, someone tells Conrad that his brother cheated on Belly during a trip with his student club to Mexico. For Conrad, it’s the moment to ask Belly if she’s really sure about where her heart lies, and to tell her he’ll always love her. The fantasy castle begins to wobble.

And yesterday – again a spoiler – Jeremiah decided at the last moment not to marry Belly, because he felt she never looked at him the way she looks at Conrad. Fans are angry: at Jeremiah, at Belly, basically at everyone. Because yes, she’s stringing both brothers along. And sometimes she says things in an attempt to push Conrad away that are downright painful.

Or more accurately: the fans on Instagram are angry. The accounts of Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno are flooded with hate comments and even death threats.

Lola Tung responded herself with a call to fans to stop the threats: “I promise you, it’s not worth it.” For Amazon Prime, that was the final straw. A video message appeared on all the official social media channels of the show with the text: “The summer we started acting normal online.” A clear nod to the title of the show – and a serious reminder to fans.
