‘Okay, what shall we make?’ I ask. We are in the supermarket around the corner from his house. He grabs a shopping basket. ‘Um, what do you like?’

‘Well, I actually like everything.’

‘Shall we make some pasta?’ he asks. Oops, just something I'm not in the mood for. ‘Yeah, that's fine!’ I say.

‘Okay, what do we put in it?

We stand hesitating by the vegetables for at least five minutes. Neither of us dares to take the lead.

Hesitantly, we then start putting things in the basket one by one. We walk further. He grabs a white baguette and cheap brie. I much prefer spelt crackers with hummus or olives. And no, not the ones with garlic.

Do you recognize it? One of your first dates with a nice boy. You want to cook together, but you are both too insecure to say what you really like.

But then we discovered Bilder & de Clercq. A luxury supermarket on De Clercqstraat in Amsterdam, where the meals are already planned and the groceries you need are ready. You just have to step into the kitchen yourself.

You can choose from various dishes, which are tastefully photographed on large posters. Everything is equally healthy and easy to make. Come on, stuff and recipe in the basket, add a bag of salted nuts, and at the checkout, you notice that the bill is quite reasonable.

You don't mind his cooking skills because he just does what the recipe describes. And you really do it together. He reads aloud, you chop, he throws it in the pan. Or the other way around, of course. In the meantime, you get to know each other better and drink a nice wine that the store has recommended for the dish.
