DO THE JACKIE DO
yourself!
When you think Jackie, you think sunglasses, pearls, a cute short dress, and that lovely hair, right? Since I've already put on her outfits and even hung a pearl necklace around my neck, it was time today to ask hairstylist Rachel Geerman from The Building to give me a Jackie haircut. And you can do it at home too. Are you ready? Here we go.
1. Wash your hair well with a strong volumizing shampoo. Rachel washes my hair with the Bodyfull from Redken.
2. Apply a good amount of mousse to your hair and distribute it over your entire scalp (for example, the Full Effect from Redken).
3. The blow-drying begins. First of all, make sure you have a hairdryer that gets really hot. That is (according to Rachel, and she knows what she's talking about, I don't) more important than one with a lot of power. Rachel prefers the Chi hairdryer, but Philips also has very good ones. Get some advice in the store. Furthermore, it's important to blow-dry against the hair to create volume. Hanging your head down while you blow-dry helps a lot, I know from experience.
4. Divide your hair into four sections: two side compartments, one section at the back, and one section at the top. Rachel dries my hair and rolls a brush into it (roll it inwards!) but you can also just use rollers from HEMA or a Carmen set. I assume that you, like me, don't have nine blow-dry brushes lying around at home.
5. While blow-drying, Rachel does spray quite a bit into the ozone layer with the Control Addict from Redken, number 28.
6. The top of my hair is treated with Redken’s Quick Tease, a product that makes your hair really hard and stiff. Perfect for teasing that will follow.
7. Once all the strands are done and there's still a quarter can of hairspray left, the brushes are taken out. My hair actually looks quite nice already. I would say there's nothing more to do, but Rachel is not satisfied yet.
8. With my head down, Rachel works on my hair. Then she takes her teasing brush…
Rachel is a top stylist, so she bought her brush in Paris, but you can also buy this kind of teasing brushes at Skins Cosmetics, no worries.
9. The teased hair is gently brushed out, my bangs are folded into the ideal position. With the pin of a comb, Rachel lifts everything a bit (can she do that with my breasts too?) and she finishes everything off with Redken's strong hairspray, Forcefull number 23 please.
10. And then I'm just done. Jackie-ish. I feel a bit over-haired (the hair equivalent of overdressed) as I walk down Stadionweg, but I've already received so many compliments today that I'm going to try it myself tomorrow.
