Last Friday, a long-held wish for many came true: Taco Stuiver opened his own salon, named 10-27 (pronounced: ten twentyseven). For those who don't know Taco, he is one of the most progressive and above all talented hairdressers in the Netherlands. As a 17-year-old, he decided he wanted to be in Vogue Paris and he succeeded. Also in the Italian one, by the way. And in the Dutch ELLE. He did hair during shows for Kenzo, Gaultier, G-star, was asked by Mario Testinoe to collaborate with him, lived in Paris, and did hair for just about everyone who matters. But success has a downside, and so does Taco. You might not say it when you see him, (Taco is tall, with a lot of chest hair, spiky wild hair standing straight up, and a squinting eye that likes to carve its own path) but deep down he is actually very sensitive and the disturbed world of the himself glitz disrupted his balance. The result: endless amounts of alcohol, crazy amounts of drugs, and balancing on the edge of madness. He once said in an interview, “I have scandalously misused my talents for years.” and glam Taco is TALL, with a lot of chest hair, spiky wild hair standing straight up, and a squinting EYE that likes to carve its own path.“

Those years are behind him, and Friday was the start of a new beginning. 10-27 is not just any salon; it is a total concept, a one-stop beauty studio. That might still sound a bit vague, but it comes down to this: do you want a fantastic haircut? Maybe a nice little makeup too? A glass of wine with it? A good conversation? A strong story? Then 10-27 is your place. Taco has a strong aversion to the regular hairdressing world. For example, you don't sit in front of the mirror while getting your hair cut (“isn't it terrible to have to keep looking at your own head, with that stupid wet hair and a big cloth around your shoulders”), but the chairs are turned so that customers can talk to each other. The cutting is obviously done by Taco himself, but also by Ellen Oosterlaar, Quinten Rutgers, and Paul Jan Jacobs. Quinten and Taco know each other from café Diep, where Quinten worked behind the bar and Taco always sat at the bar. The two really disliked each other until that one night when they drank whisky together and Taco decided that Quinten should be trained by him. And so it happened. Taco taught him everything, and Quinten cut his first customer in the pub, in exchange for a beer. It is emblematic of how Taco sees the profession. Paul has a similar background. He was a skipper, came into contact with Taco through mutual friends, and has been learning from him for about a year now. “I cut people, not hair,” Taco says.

“ISN'T IT TERRIBLE to have to keep looking at your own head, with that STUPID wet hair and a big cloth around your shoulders?”.

“During the opening, photos are taken by top photographer Jan Willem Kaldenbach, Karakter Wijnimport supplies bottles of white and red wine, and the sinks are filled with oysters and sashimi. ”Everyone wants to collaborate as soon as you mention the name Taco Stuiver,” Warner Stange tells me. He is the one who, together with Taco, has embarked on this project and can now not only look back but also look forward. With this concept, they are going to conquer the world, just watch.”

Look, I can be long or short about it, 10-27 is just really too cool. During the opening, the drinks are flowing, we smoke inside, ashes on the floor, the DJ plays one great track after another, and Taco, clad in a pure white rock “n roll suit, is the undisputed star of the evening. It's just that Ellen (Taco's partner) cut my hair just two weeks ago, so I can't go again now, but I can't wait until I can. Household announcements: 10-27 is located in the heart of Amsterdam (Raamsteeg 2), has no closing times (that alone is just super cool), you can also just come in for a glass of wine, and for an appointment, you call 020 422 67 96. Cheers, to Taco. And to always having a good haircut.
