During one of our endless fashion chats, May suggested that she sometimes finds a little hat to look a bit pretentious. Jet and Liesbeth dare to do anything, and Josselin loves a less pronounced style. Personally, I have quite a hat head and also have a nice collection, from floppy to fedora. Yet the truth is that most of them rarely or never see the light of day and lie untouched on a shelf in my closet aging. Oh yes, on vacation, then I dare. Because wearing a hat is completely legal then. It protects the face against unwanted harmful sun rays after all. So it apparently works like this: if something is very present – in this case the hat – while it has no real function but serves purely for decoration, then we girls (May and I at least) apparently have a problem with that. Completely ridiculous because twelve centimeters of heels also have no direct purpose but that doesn't apply to our kite.
I decided to delve into hat usage in other countries. And I'm not talking about America where everything and everyone wears a cap on two legs at any time. No, I'm looking at London or Paris where it is accepted as a fashion statement and the way women and girls wear a hat seems completely natural. In England, they also have an online poll from the Headwear Association where the hat example of the year is chosen. Hats off to Miss Moss who won the award this year and rightly so because her typical London street style, with floppy hat, is legendary and an example for every fashionista.
So we go for it too. Whether useful or not, the hat is hot.
Which model?
Doesn't matter as long as it supports your style and fashion statement and looks like a natural extension of your look..
the baseball cap
Basically belongs with sweatshirts and jogging pants. The thing is meant for sporty and hip-hop expressions. Stilettos and clutches don't go with that. With jeans and sneakers, you're completely fine. Never, I repeat never, wear it supposedly funny backwards. Not even if your name is (sorry Ali) Ali B.
the cowboy hat
A straw version is a hit in summer because it is wonderfully airy and functional. Try to choose a model that deviates as much as possible from the original American western model unless your name is Dolly Parton or you do line dancing.
dthe fedora
Is a classic inspired by the men's model. Unlike the floppy hat, this model has a less wide brim. This model has proven to be mega popular in the past year among both men and women. It actually goes with everything. A real must-buy therefore…
the floppy hat
Is the most striking hat of the headwear spectrum and thus especially pushed to great fashion heights by Kate Moss. The model became popular in the 70s when it was worn with jeans with wide flares and platform soles. Wear it especially casually.
Do and Don't
- Unless you are a member of the royal family, it is not done to match your little hat in material and color with the rest of your outfit. Very boring.
- A hat will always attract attention. So be careful not to wear too many other striking things. It is not the intention that you make a overdressed impression.
- Keep in mind that a hat with a wide brim makes you look smaller.
- A greeting kiss can, just like an unexpected gust of wind, be fatal for the position of the hat on your head. Nothing works more on the laugh muscles than a model that is crooked. Hold the model with your hand so that it cannot shift or blow away (Maxima does this too)
How is it actually supposed to be?
Unlike men, women are allowed to keep their headgear on indoors.
If you wear a hat to an official occasion, be careful that the brim of your model is not mega wide, which would obstruct everyone's view.
