Because I was the fashion and beauty director for Elle and Beau Monde, I am supposed to be familiar with the phenomenon of taste and style throughout my life. In Peggy's Pages, I share my opinion and you can get answers to everything you struggle with in the fashion field.
Should bags and shoes match, can you wear silver with gold together? According to the classic How It Actually Should Be style norms, the answer is a short and simple NO.
when
I remember my mother who wouldn't dream of leaving the house if her shoes, bag, and gloves didn't match in color. And I can tell you that Mrs. Setje Completje, as my sister and I called her, still doesn't. Lipstick and nail polish also had to be worn in harmony.
As it goes, your taste is consciously or unconsciously influenced by what you catch on your retina at a young age. For example, I would never combine my stainless steel Cartier watch with a gold ring and I even let the choice of gold or silver for the buckle of my belt or the buttons on my jacket depend on that. And of course, my bra and panties (which I buy as a set) match.
turnaround
When the phenomenon of the It bag made its entrance into the fashion world in the 80s, the style norms wavered. The designer bag played the leading role and it didn't matter what shoes you wore with it. Among fashionistas, the idea emerged that you were quite conservative if you dressed your look according to the classic combination norms. Just as unimaginative as wearing the same designer from head to toe... It was especially not the intention at that time to give the impression that you had really tried hard.
do it now.
As it goes in life, especially with fashion trends, there is a turnaround. Almost all leading designers are reverting to accessories like bags and shoes that are coordinated with each other. Perhaps also caused by the designers being influenced by the 50s and 60s of the last century. Last summer, designers sent their models down the runway in a total look where everything, clothing, accessories, and makeup, was in harmony. Even green and blue nail polish got sisters in the form of lipstick in the same shade.
Anyway, the norm is different for everyone. For me, fashion & style mainly means playing with combinations and coordinates: Colors, materials, long and short, wide and tight in the right balance and harmony. For someone else, it might mean that imaginative combining is part of the game. The most important thing is that you wear what makes you feel good...
And with every outfit, there is a fashion legitimacy. So actually, you are always good.
