Amayzine’s This is LA
As long as we can remember, Los Angeles has been a dream destination where stars come from and fairy tales come true. The city captures everyone's imagination, and rightly so, as it is the place where ‘it’ happens when it comes to film, music, media, health, and increasingly art and fashion. And nothing has been said yet about the insane restaurants and hotels. The idea that everything plastic fantastic or gold that glitters is outdated, as especially in neighborhoods like Venice, Silverlake, and the Art District, a true hippie renaissance is underway, the new LA. And everyone wants to be part of it. Style bloggers Sabrina Meijer (afterDRK) and Yara Michels (ChapterFriday) spent a few months there last year for inspiration. And now that nearby festivals like Coachella and Burning Man are more popular than ever in our country, there seems to be no better moment to share our favorite spots in the city of angels with you. Here is Amayzine’s L.A.
West Hollywood / Beverly Hills
Spago The iconic restaurant of Wolfgang Puck in Beverly Hills has been little more than faded glory in recent years, but since the refresh it received a year ago, Spago is back on top of his game and popular as ever. One of the highlights in 90210.
Chateau MarmontIf these walls could talk… Another icon we could fill hours with exciting stories about is Chateau Marmont. Getting in easily is not an option, but once you’ve secured a spot on the terrace by the pool, you have to be careful not to trip over the Sean Penns and Lindsay Lohans of this world. This is Hollywood!
Petit ErmitageThe Roosevelt is a classic, but for those looking for something new and more low key Petit Ermitage is a delightful destination. Here, a fantasy world is created. The mystical atmosphere, the stunning rooftop pool and bar, and still somewhat affordable too.
Pump The brand new gay-friendly bar of society lady and restaurateur (hotspots Villa Blanca and Sur) Lisa Vanderpump. This woman breathes glitter and glamour, and her restaurants do too.
The Beverly Hills Hotel Normally, a visit to The Beverly Hills Hotel with its Polo Lounge would be an absolute recommendation, were it not for the fact that this legendary hotel is being boycotted throughout Hollywood and surrounding areas (with Ellen DeGeneres and Jay Leno leading the charge). The Sultan of Brunei, owner of The Dorchester group which includes The Beverly Hills Hotel, 45 Park Lane in London, and Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris, has just introduced the very woman- and gay-unfriendly Sharia law. The protest against the sultan and his hotels has already led to a flood of canceled events. The damage is said to already exceed one and a half million dollars
The Row This week, the Olsen twins opened the first flagship store of their brand The Row on Melrose Place. That is definitely worth a visit.
Venice
In the laid back beach neighborhood of Venice runs Abbot Kinney street, where it’s truly a blast when it comes to fun shops, restaurants, and bars.
Gjelina is perhaps the hottest hotspot of the moment. This all seasonal, organic and local, community driven restaurant is so popular that they have no problem sending types like Taylor Swift away when they are full. The food is truly amazing, and luckily they have recently added a take away counter.
Venice Beach Wines Working from the same green hippie philosophy, you can drink or take home the best wines from the region here.
Other gems in Venice when it comes to atmosphere, taste, and quality include Suberba Snack Bar and Tasting Kitchen.
Los Feliz / Silverlake
Rock ‘n roll chic is a nice way to describe these incredibly hip neighborhoods.
The Dresden This classic has been around for 60 years, and it feels like stepping onto a movie set where you can drink a dirty martini with Don Draper and Frank Sinatra at the bar. Great steaks, even better cocktails, and live jazz every evening.
Figaro Bistrot Fresh croissants in the morning and the perfect steak frites in the evening.
Forgela Here you can exchange the harvest from your own vegetable garden for meals in the restaurant. It doesn’t get more hippie than this.
Art District
Until a few years ago, people didn't want to be found dead in Downtown, in fact, that was probably exactly what happened, because with the homeless colony Skid Row on the left and drug houses on the right, it was, to put it mildly, unsafe to call it. But as happens in more cities in these kinds of unwanted and therefore cheap places, artists moved there to express themselves, after which the hipsters and hospitality followed.
Ace Hotel We know this from places like Seattle, Brooklyn, and London and it is just as cool here.
WurstkücheHere they serve the culinary treasures from Europe such as German sausages, Belgian fries, and Dutch beer. Of course, in a hipster outfit.
Bäco MercatSurprisingly delicious fusion sandwiches and voted restaurant of the year.
