Hello milk bottles! Hi brown legs!
– EVERYTHING ABOUT SELF-TANNER –
We have been able to enjoy the sun for a while, but let's be honest, did you dare to wrap yourself in a short skirt? Hmhm, no, I thought so. Those white legs caused a blinding effect for everyone who wasn't wearing sunglasses. So it's time for a self-tanner, because you understand that a tanning bed is really a no-go area.
A self-tanner. Sounds tempting, because after all, it's a cream that provides a temporary sunkissed color. You don't have to sit in the sun under UV radiation, and a visit to the tanning bed is out of the question. Every self-tanner contains DHA, a substance that reacts to the amino acids of the skin cells in the upper layer. Due to the chemical reaction on those dead skin cells, they get a brown color.
Prevent the Oompa Loompa effect
I can imagine that some self-tanners can be a bit frightening. After all, you don't want a blotchy result and definitely not to bring out the Oompa Loompa in yourself. Now that orange effect is a bit outdated, but if that happens, it's due to the amount of DHA in the product. Some products have a very high content, which means that after just one application, you get a result of 2 years of Ibiza, while others create the sunkissed look of a week in Cote D’azur. Always test it first before you really start applying on an inconspicuous spot, like the inside of your arm or your ankle.
Preparation is half the work
It may sound a bit silly, but preparation is really half the work. If you don't want spots, then step under the shower and scrub and wash the whole thing. Body lotion, makeup, and other stuff can cause spots, and since self-tanner adheres to dead skin cells, scrubbing ensures a more even complexion as loose dead skin cells are washed down the drain.
Be patient
Apply calmly, massaging, and pay attention to where you have or haven't been. Of course, you want to see immediate results, but be patient. Some self-tanners need a little time to show their true nature. Usually, you only see how it turns out after a few hours. So don't keep applying, because then you'll get those spots that you actually don't want. Also handy, don't apply too much on rough spots, like on the knees and ankles. Skin cells accumulate there, so you get a strong result. And yes, again those spots. Just scrub well beforehand and apply a little thinner, then it's solved.
A few wisdoms
Done applying? Good, wash your hands with water and soap, otherwise, you'll end up with those lovely orange palms. And, it may sound a bit silly, but for those who don't know yet, a self-tanner does not help as sun protection. It may look like you've already caught some sun, but it really doesn't help as protection. So still apply that stuff.
