Kris Berry grew up with a lot of music, on the Antillean islands where she lived until her 19th and in the European cities where she studied and worked. Now she lives in Amsterdam, but travels around the world to share her music. The song ‘Let go’ has been on repeat for weeks. From Curaçao, where she had to shoot a video, she tells me her favorite spots.

 A weekend away, where do you prefer to go?

“I absolutely go to Paris, for macarons. Or London or Berlin, those are also such nice cities. Where do you actually not go for a weekend? Usually, I go for gigs, otherwise for a concert or really unwind in places where you can do that well – like the islands Schiermonnikoog and Vlieland in the summer. I also love Gothenburg in Sweden, Zeeland, mountains, everything relaxed is actually nice.”

Which hotel do you prefer to go to?

“In Amsterdam, I find The Dylan hotel or the Conservatorium very nice places. When I'm in Barcelona, I choose Hotel Majestic on Passeig de Gràcia. Have you ever been to Bangkok? Then the Bayan Tree Hotel is a good choice. Really delicious luxury.”

Where do you like to eat in Amsterdam?

“Okura Hotel is lovely, but of course not something to go to weekly. Then there has to be something to celebrate. Usually, when I eat out, I go to eateries like Louter, Blauwhooft, and Café Restaurant Cook.”

Lunching in Amsterdam?

“I like to sit at Coffee Room on Kinkerstraat. For the vegans among us, Dophert in the Spaarndammerbuurt is a nice lunch spot run by a friend of mine. Very unique, tasty, cozy, and healthy of course. Something a bit neater but certainly not less fun: the Conservatorium hotel.”

Best place to write your songs?

“At home or in my favorite pub in Amsterdam like De Prins, Winkel, or Two for Joy. A really nice coffee place. By the way, I can also work very well in the park. Oosterpark, Vondelpark, Wertheim. Everywhere. Even when I'm traveling by the way.”

Best place to perform?

“Actually in every place where I feel at home, I don't need to sit there long to get that feeling. It's an aura thing, I feel it almost immediately.”

Where do you want to perform again?

“Into the great wide open (the Naar Buiten stage), Glastonbury, New Orleans, and also once in a nice theater in New York.”

Where do you prefer to shop?

“For the really big purchases, I prefer to go to America. In the Netherlands, I browse vintage shops. For my shoes, I go to Nine West and for basic dresses to Laundry Industry. My favorite brands are Gstar, Lee, Amatør, and Lovestoned clothing. I recently bought two high-waisted shorts. For the urgent things, I quickly dive into Zara or Mango.”

Is there a difference in stage and real life clothing?

“Yes, there is a difference, but it's just that on stage I exaggerate it a bit.”

Best company?

“My dearest friend Hanna, a cup of black coffee or a cup of tea. You can't make me happier. By the way, I also find being alone very nice. I need my space.”
