CHRISTMAS HATERS AROUND YOU?
This is how you lure them in.
“It’s December 6th, and now you want a tree?” It’s the same song every year. I really enjoy Sinterklaas but it’s a big obstacle to my Christmas galore. If I lived in New York or London, I could have immersed myself two weeks ago with jingle bells, mistletoes and angel hair.
Because I, and you probably too, already have two people in my immediate surroundings (one at work and one at home) who are not necessarily huge Christmas fans, it’s important to handle this well and lead them a bit by the nose. Ingenuity and caution are required. Let’s go.
Build it up slowly
Start decorating the house under the guise of ‘winter’. Immediately putting on Mariah Carey and polishing the tree top sets off alarm bells for everyone. Turn on the fireplace often, ensure an overflowing basket of firewood (it also looks nice if you don’t have a fireplace), lay some thick blankets (maybe coincidentally in red and green colors) on the couch and burn lots of candles.
Find each other
That tree, you have a right to it. But don’t decorate it in such a way that Christmas haters become uneasy. Just do lights and bows. Here in the editorial office, where the Christmas hater sometimes grumbles, a tree is coming (Yes Liesbeth, you read that right) but I will decorate it with our Amayzine letters. Or with gifts for the editors. Ha, now everyone is on board.
Orange with cloves
This doesn’t really have anything to do with Christmas but you create a scent that gets everyone in the mood. You’re enchanting them. Take an orange and fill it completely with cloves. A bit of a task but it looks very cozy and smells nice. Really, you’ll seduce everyone.
And then the music
When I’m alone in the car, the Skyradio infusion goes on. Immediately. But with Christmas haters around you, this is a very unwise plan. With my beloved, I am under a Christmas music ban. I can only play it during the Christmas days themselves. I also found a solution for that. The Christmas album by Michael Bublé, old wine in a new bottle. What do you think? He loves it and I tested it on Liesbeth today and she still likes it.
No holly but…
Do you want to decorate your table a bit more? Buy those cute mini Christmas trees from Rivièra Maison. Put about five together, sprinkle some fake snow on top and bet that everyone thinks it’s coziest at your place?
