Things we’ve learned so far

From New York Fashion Week – part II

It’s Tuesday evening as I write this and once again we have had many fashion- and life lessons cross our paths.

 different colour shoes are in.

This summer Cécile Narinx appeared in the NRC with her signature pencil skirt and pumps. Nothing strange there, except that one shoe was black and the other red. Or something like that.  In New York they do the by-accident-on-purpose-shoe-swap thing, and now I’m almost certain that Cécile was playing this game.

 Obsessed is the word

When I was in New York last summer, the standard response everyone used to a heavy story was ‘historical’ or even the word, ‘epic’. No dude, landing on the moon is historical and epic should be banned. This Fashion Week the theme is ‘obsessed’. Pat McGrath is ‘#obsessed’ with the DieselGold look and hmb79 is #obsessed with the dresses of Naeem Khan and Frenchie221 is #obsessed with her two cats staring out the window.

 full of ink

Models are clearly going through a clean trend (very few tattoos or piercings), but the hair and make-up artists thunder on through. I haven’t yet met a make-up artist or hairstylist without tattoos. The credo seems to be many & funny, because we are seeing sleeves, hands, necks and legs so full of ink that even David Beckham would disapprove. Is there a trend to be found within all this tattoo-stuff? Yes indeed. After the reindeers (remember Shakira?) and the handwritten texts, it’s now seems to be the turn of the funny creatures. Cartoons, naked manneken-pis type thing, alarm clock digits or garter belts.

 Coconut water is the trend

Coconut water is good for the skin and against hangovers. So it seems pretty clear that it’s the drink of the moment during a week where everything is about your appearance, and where alcohol regularly appears in your glass.

 Lincoln Center is ‘so over’

Once upon a time, back in the day, shows were held in tents setup in Bryant Park. Last year, Lincoln Centre was the epi-centre of the New York Fashion Week. Easy to keep things in one place you’d think, but it’s a rather uninspiring, exhibition hall type place. So we’re not terribly sad that DvF chose the Spring Studio’s in Tribecca, or that Victoria Beckham chose a beautiful building in the Financial District as a show venue, or that Vera Wang transformed the Dia Centre on 22nd Street into a catwalk with pebbles. It’s not so bad if some traditions are broken. Really.
