Fun things to do in Cannes
FROM HOTEL TO SHOP AND BACK AGAIN
Every summer, a large exhibition on fashion photography takes place in Cannes; the Internationale Festival van Modefotografie. When I read that fashion photographer Chico Bialas was exhibiting as a guest of honor, it was clear that I would interrupt my vacation in Saint Tropez for some culture in Cannes. I met Chico years ago when I had just been hired at ELLE as fashion editor. In the Netherlands, he was mainly known to the general public as the photographer of the humorous and original Mexx campaigns. He worked with Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, and Monica Bellucci, all of whom can be seen on the 3 by 5 meter enlarged photos that are stretched between the palm trees. You must go to the Jardin de la Roseraie. Work by other well-known and lesser-known fashion photographers can also be seen along the Croissette in Cannes until the end of this month.
Wat te dragen
In Cannes, the paparazzi are on high alert non-stop. Everyone makes an effort to look perfectly styled. Here, a polished image with a total designer look wins over the nonchalant bohemian look that you encounter in Saint Tropez. Opt for Hermès, Louis Vuitton, or Chanel (at least just a bag if your budget doesn't stretch further.) And naturally, a pair of skyscraper heels (even in combination with your swimsuit). You never know if you might run into someone who invites you on their yacht….
Waar te lunchen
If you want to eat on the beach, try to reserve a spot at Z Plage of the Hotel Martinez. The chef combines healthy and tasty dishes using fresh local products. Z Plage is the place for people watching. When I was there, the paparazzi were trying to capture Madonna's jet-skiing kids. In the Nice Matin the next day's edition, I saw that they succeeded. By the way, during the high season, you should definitely make a reservation.
Waar te eten
Celebrities and the fashionable jet set gather in the evening at Le Baoli. It is the absolute hotspot during the film festival and the place where you can stand side by side with Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Paris Hilton, and Uma Thurman. Later in the evening, the party really kicks off here and the restaurant transforms into an open-air nightclub.
Waar te winkelen
Along the boulevard with many photogenic hotels like the Carlton, you can find almost everything in designer chic. Lots of very expensive jewelers and well-known shops from Dolce & Gabbana. In rue d’Antibes 21, I always pop into Jacques Loup, who sells the latest (shoes and clothing) from Marni, Lanvin, Jil Sander, Fendi, Todd’s, and more.
Vintage winkelen
In places where something like a limit on your credit card does not exist, and strolling has been elevated to a higher art, where women change outfits at least three times a day and never want to be spotted in the same outfit more than twice, second-hand shops are a logical consequence. A stone's throw from the Croisette, you will find luxury vintage shops: Le Depot and Declic Depot.
With a bit of luck, you might find something in your size for half or less of the original price. A couple of years ago, I bought a vintage Kelly bag from Hermès at Le Depot, which, I am assured, has since increased in price. A better investment than the stock market, or is that a very weak excuse for my shopping addiction??
