Where we have breakfast with prosecco and dive into the city with bottles of premixed drinks, there are also people among us who work on Sundays, holidays, and King's Day. So does VanVelzen, the closing act of 538 in Breda. I spoke to him just before he took the stage.
Roel, what a day for you.
“It started with raising the flag with my son to visiting the Oranjeplein in Haarlem where all kinds of King's Day activities are with my children to performing for 40,000 people here in Breda. I'm used to working on days when everyone is off, and I'm not much of a drinker, so I don't find it difficult. But after the concert, I will go home nicely, then I don't have to turn off the lights here in Breda.”
And what will be the highlight of the day for you?
“Definitely raising the flag with my son. It's the first time they are really aware of King's Day, and I found that a very special moment.”
Have you thought of something special for your performance tonight? Another tribute to our new king?
“At some point, I will come on stage with the Dutch flag. A bit bombastic perhaps, but I thought; what would Freddie Mercury have done? And that was the flag. By the way, last year we summarized the entire Beatrix period in Queen songs on the last Queen's Day. That was very special.”
So there is a connection with the royal family?
“Absolutely, I think it's a beautiful thing and I also believe that King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima really give it a current flair. They are the perfect ambassadors for our country. Moreover, I do enjoy a day where we all show pride in our country and express that together.”
And what does Sunday look like in the VanVelzen household?
“When I hear Sinatra, especially ”I’ve got you under my skin', then I know it's Sunday. Furthermore, Sunday is all about family. And a few more hours in my studio at home working on new songs.”
