While we all sit here behind our desks in a possibly dreary environment and have been dealing with a stuttering summer for weeks, there is an event happening in Florence where the most beautiful, handsome, and stylish men on earth are simply walking around in the wild. Pitti Uomo, the biennial fashion fair for everything related to men's fashion. The enormous fair is a dream for buyers, stylists, press, and for us, because thanks to the web, we can watch along. After extensively checking photos here are some do's and don'ts so that if, should you ever be present yourself, you at least know what to do.
1. Combine different styles.
Last winter editions, you saw many men dressed sharply in a three-piece suit and wearing a beanie. For those who want to convey a bit more luxury, opt for a cashmere version. A tried-and-true recipe is the same three-piece suit (or 18-piece for that matter) with wildly unkempt hair and a large bushy beard. A neat pair of trousers like those of a suit can simply be worn under a camouflage print sweater, or a destroyed jeans with a super fitted shirt.
2. Mix every pattern you encounter.
Herringbone, checks large or small, stripes thick or thin, polka dots, everything is allowed at once and moreover, everything must be at once.
3. High water
No longer the losers of the class, but rather for the man of the group. In the Netherlands, of course, popularized by Jort Kelder and also a frequently seen look at Pitti.
4. Don't be afraid of color and accessories
Bright blue, canary yellow, fuchsia pink, poison green, and fire truck red – it can all be done. A real man is not afraid of color, so it seems to be the motto. As for accessories, they must not be missing. A hat, pocket squares, suspenders, a bag, a good watch, a wrist full of bracelets, and of course, an absolutely fantastic pair of sunglasses.
5. Quality is the most important.
Don't think you can show up in a suit from Zara, you are at a fabric fair for crying out loud. The quality must ooze from your suit and the fit should be tailored to your body by the best tailor you know.
6. For women, choose flat shoes.
Remarkably many women in flat shoes. Loafers, Adidas Stan Smith, elegant sandals, espadrilles, All Stars, or Birkenstocks (I personally strongly oppose but so be it). A chunky wedge can still work, but pointed stilettos are rarely seen.
We have a source roaming around at Pitti who has captured the appetizing figures for you armed with a camera. For more inspiring images, follow this Instagram account and definitely don't miss this blog either. Enjoy!
