It’s starting to seem a bit tedious but I’m still on vacation. Yet there is no such thing as a dull moment. After a brief visit to the most beautiful masseria ever, we are now heading south. To Sofia Coppola to be precise.
Don't tell anyone
There are those places where, when you arrive, you immediately think, to be silent or to speak? Those locations that are so special that on one hand you want to keep them strictly secret (because imagine if there’s no place for you next year because some vague acquaintances listened well to you and booked even earlier than you) and on the other hand the missionary in you says; spread the word.
Go forth and come back
Masseria Montenapoleone in Pezze di Grecco is such a place. Ultimately, the storyteller in me (I always find ‘journalist’ such a pedantic word for someone who deals with the lighter matters of life) wins over the egocentric. This address must be shared. Think of a building from 500 (!) AD. A saltwater pool with a sea view. The most purely furnished rooms, organic wines, and even cola for the kids that is responsibly produced. If I had to point out one area for improvement, it would be the music. During the day by the pool, a bit too much of the elevator music version of Suicide Blonde and Like a Virgin, and in the evening during dinner, a bit too much steaming disco. But further… Go forth. You only want to leave when you know you will come back.
On to Sofia
Our vacation motto for years has been ‘dove ci porta il vento’, ‘where the wind takes us’. Much more than a phone, a car (and yes, also a credit card with a straight back) you don’t need. I had my sights set on Basilicata, to the west of the heel. There, Francis and Sofia Ford Coppola have a hotel and that seemed to me a prrrima travel destination. Research on the Internet showed that for three nights we would soon have to pay 4500 euros and that credit card isn’t exactly straight either. Yet Basilicata remains our mission, even if we only drink a glass in the garden.
We are leaving today and have also booked a pretty nice address. I’ll tell you everything and who knows, I might see you there.
