Silvana Hoekstra, Senior PR Manager Fashion at MaisonPR, is crazy about bags. And preferably in crazy colors that you don't see very often. Just like this one from Escada. Tell Silvana, what’s in this gem?
How many bags do you have?
‘I have endless bags and pouches but I always switch between my bright yellow Mulberry and this purple Escada bag. It's a bit of a statement color with my mostly black outfits.’
How did you get this beauty?
‘When we brought ESCADA on board as a client at MaisonPR, I was so happy that I immediately went to the store on PC Hooftstraat to treat myself to this bag.’
What does a bag do for a woman?
‘For me, a bag is that one accessory that really makes a difference in an outfit. A bracelet is nice, but a big bag just does a bit more. And of course, I carry my whole life in that one little bag. My friends are always wide-eyed when they see what comes out of that one bag. A kind of magical bottom.’
Be honest, are you a bit careful with it or do you throw it in a corner?
‘I admit, I mistreat my bags. I always intend to take good care of them, but I just can't manage it. Ultimately, it's a (sometimes particularly valuable) utility item and it really goes everywhere with me, so yes, your bag can get dirty or get scratches.’
What about the contents? Are you a chaotic person or neatly organized?
‘An organized chaos. For others, my bag is a big pile of junk, but I usually know exactly which corner to rummage in to find what I'm looking for.’
What do you always carry in your bag?
‘Always my favorite scent from Jo Malone. A bottle of Yeau! to add some flavor to the daily required liters of water, a spare pair of tights (the Invisible from Black&Blanche is my favorite) and extra attachments for my LBD – a super fun concept from the brand N'Mour, the basic dress I'm wearing can be transformed into something else with attachments. I've kept it quite simple with metallic accessories, but if I stop by a fashion party tonight, I can also click on the feather attachments, for example.’
Do you notice that more doors open with a designer bag?
‘Yes and No. I come from a small village where no one understands it, of course, but when I walk into a business meeting or a luxury boutique, I always see the eyes dart to the bag when I carry a rare piece. I personally find the quality and the striking look much more important than the brand label.’
If a woman could only have one bag, which would it be?
‘My first real designer bag was a bright yellow Mulberry. A colleague cleverly pointed out that when you choose a striking color or model, people think you must have the basic black one, because such a crazy color suggests an impulse purchase rather than saving for years.’
Is anyone already eyeing this gem to borrow?
‘Not really. I quickly choose the striking pieces, so they really belong to me; I think that for my friends it feels a bit like a dress-up party with Sil's stuff instead of a personal statement.’
Do you prefer trendy or classic? And does a bag also need to be practical?
‘I do lean a bit towards classic. Classic shapes mainly and then in a trendy color. But a bag where I can't fit anything in is not for me. The bigger, the better.’
And lastly, is there another one on your wishlist? Which one?
‘At the top is the Chloe Baylee Tote bag in dark blue. But I also always find the bags from Kate Spade amazing. Delightfully crazy. When I'm at Gallery Lafayette in Paris, that's the first brand I look for.’
