Nothing more enviable than a club of girlfriends in the sun on the terrace. And so this summer we go in search of the Netherlands' cutest Terrace Birds. Episode 1: Marleen van der Meulen (22) and Elisabeth Nouwens (24) on the terrace of Cotton in Amsterdam.

What are you guys talking about?

Marleen: ‘Today is a case of catching up, haven't seen each other for at least two months. We talked about how Lies has been working at the Children's Telephone since February.’
Elisabeth: ‘We also discussed our future plans: our goal is to become very serious psychologists. At the same time, for now we are still happy to be able to go out on the terrace at four o'clock.’

What makes this such a fine terrace?

Elisabeth: ‘Marleen lives in the Pijp and I in the Jordaan, this is right in the middle.’

What's in the glass?

Elisabeth: ‘We just had a latte, but are now switching to the Jupiler. ‘
Marleen: ‘Beer is wise to start with, on Friday you never know where the evening will take you. ’
Elisabeth: ‘Wine sometimes gives you a headache and makes you drowsy quickly.’
Marleen: ‘Yes, beer keeps you alert.’

Who drinks the most?

Marleen: ‘Me. I fear.’
Elisabeth: ‘Marleen is the hospitality guy.’

Best terrace tip in Amsterdam?

Marleen: ‘The Whale on Spaarndammerstaat is sunny and cosy.’
Elisabeth: ‘And all the terraces on the Noordermarkt  are fun!’
Marleen: ‘The terrace of Inside Outside for that matter, it's just there is always such chaos that I can't concentrate on ’the conversation.’
Elisabeth: ‘Boca's on Westerstraat is also chill. Not big, there's always space and sun. And it's around the corner from me. So crawling home.’
