Actress, film buff and Cinetree founder Hanna Verboom is not busy picking out a red carpet-worthy dress for the Netherlands Film Festival. She buffets through in her Cinetree office to prepare everything and at the screening of one of the Cinetree films tomorrow in Utrecht, she can quietly appear in jeans.
When the work is done, I'll cook a nice dinner for a friend. What I'm going to make? Oh, is it such an interview, haha.”
So you parked your, well-paid, acting career to start, the unpaid, Cinetree?
“Yes, I have been unemployed for a year and a half. Well, not unemployed, income-less because I am rarely busy. I got the idea because there are so many great films that should be shared. That's why I founded Cinetree.co.uk, an online platform where you can see two choice films every month.”
Sounds fun, how exactly does it work?
“Cinetree works with curators, Halina Reijn, Jeroen van Koningsbrugge, Joris Luyendijk and me as founder. Femke Halsema joins us, so tomorrow we will also show her choice film which she will introduce in person. We select ten films each month that you can watch all month long on your tablet, computer, smartphone and television. You pay €4.95 for a cinematic gem and that money is put back into making new films.”
And now you don't have a moment to yourself?
“Launching a platform like this is extremely busy though, I haven't had a weekend in ages. But, I believe very much in what I do and that helps. Sundays are sacred, by the way. Then I take walks, eat at friends” houses and spend hours spinning through the week's old churn I get from my neighbour. This Sunday I also hope to read through The Circle by Dave Eggers, a satire on the digital world in which I now also move."
So there's not really a thank-god-it's-Friday moment today?
“Yep. When I am done, I will drink wine with a friend and cook for her. In fact, I have been doing that recently. I put it off for a long time because I travelled a lot and also preferred to eat out but I've totally got the hang of it now. I got mackerel yesterday so I think I will make a nice salad there.”
And so tomorrow is the big day...
“Tomorrow we are showing a beautiful film Stories we tell, it is Femke Halsema's choice film. She will personally explain why this film touched her. It was made by the female director Sarah Polley who I really love and he...well you just have to see it.”
Hanna still has 6 tickets available for the viewing Tweet now: I'm coming to watch a film!@Cinetree and the first six will get a seat in the, otherwise extremely cosy, cinema ’t Hoogt in Utrecht. Saturday 16:00.credits photo: Marc de Groot
