Things we learned during
London Fashion Week
New York is full of important life lessons, but there is also plenty to learn in London. We keep our eyes and ears open and present to you the things that have stood out to us the most in the past few days.
Anyone not wearing sneakers should really go home. It's sneakers high and sneakers low, but mostly low. At Burberry, we certainly saw enough heels among the visitors, but the ‘cool’ girls are all wearing flat versions, and the models on the catwalk all got to strut their stuff in sneakers or sandals. I myself let this trend go to my head and bought a pair of white sneakers on day 2 of London Fashion Week. It's ridiculous, I know, but sometimes I'm more sensitive to trends than I want to admit.
Photographers hunting celebs and other stylish folks outside the shows are all in contact with each other via iPhone earbuds. We kept seeing them standing around, and suddenly they all ran in the same direction where at first glance nothing was happening, until a minute later a Cara Delevigne-type walked by. They operate in groups, each at a corner of the venue, calling out when someone walks where.
It's not winter, but certainly not very warm either. Especially in the evenings, it cools down quite a bit, but that's absolutely no reason for the women here to give in to something practical like a coat. Are you crazy? A dress, high heels, and bare legs are more than enough to get through the night, shivering and chattering away.
When it comes to sunglasses, the preference goes to round models, John Lennon style. If it's not round, then preferably very, very, very large, but normal glasses are hardly seen.
Another trend that cannot be missed, is the cape or poncho. Brought to the catwalk by Burberry last February and now impossible to miss in the streets. And in the stores, Topshop for example, is full of capes in all colors and patterns.
Yes, this is a bit strange, but we noticed that especially the more robustly built women like to wear leggings. With flat shoes and a small t-shirt that doesn't cover the derrière. All fine, but it's often not the most charming sight. By the way, these are not fashion types because as we already mentioned, fashion girls don't eat.
