You know them well, those snapshots of the international hot & happening. Fresh and fruity, they smile at the lens of the present paparazzi as they land in Barbados, St Barth, or another captivating holiday hotspot after a long flight. Victoria, Kim, or Chiara, have you ever caught them with a wrinkled face after hours of travel? No way! And believe me, if that hairstyle looks like a just-out-of-bed look, there has been a ceremony with styling products beforehand. A good example leads to good following, and voilà, my tips. Make it as comfortable as possible for yourself so that you too can shine rested and paparazzi-proof after a long and tiring journey.
Check-in: A bit of a celeb naturally travels Business Class. Even if they haven't paid for it, they often get the upgrade due to their status. Imagine being bothered by someone who wants a selfie with you in Economy. If you want to increase your chances of an upgrade, realize that wearing flip-flops and sweatpants will make your chances nil. Make sure you look a bit presentable, or in other words, Business Class worthy. Be nice and polite and a bit creative when checking in. Try to pretend to have some kind of handicap. For example, that painful knee – ouch – just had a meniscus operation.
Oh yes, here's another good one: Do you see an endless line at the Economy check-in counter? Act determined but clueless and slide into the always faster line at the Business Class counter. A bit cheeky, but I assure you that 9 times out of 10 they won't send you back to join that mega line. You can also throw in that painful knee again here.
Luggage: Choose a matching luggage set. Nothing looks as shabby and fashion-unworthy as a mishmash trolley. If you happen to be about to invest in a Louis Vuitton set, realize that you are not the only one. Due to the popular fakes, LV has become commonplace, and the baggage carousel is full of it. Preferably choose something more original. With a set from Prada or Hermès, you also make a credible entrance. Personally, I am attached to the travel luggage from Mulberry that I have in all sizes. For a handbag, I recommend a piece with a bit of volume. All the tax-free items purchased on the way must fit in it. I always lose those canary yellow tax-free bags somewhere at Schiphol. Moreover, the bag must be large enough for iPads, iPhones, some magazines, and the necessary beauty products – leave-in conditioner for your hair, lip balm, moisturizing cream for your face, etc. – for in the air. It's a bit of an investment, but the Birkin from Hermès is ideal, stylish and moreover for life.
Travel clothing: Because I don't want to look like a lost yogi on the way to and at the airport – fashion is my profession – I take a set of comfortably fitting clothes in my handbag for a long journey. Once in the air, I rush to the restroom to wrap myself in thin sweatpants and a cashmere top. In any case, nothing that constricts, so the shoes are also replaced by socks. Essential for the journey is my huge pashmina from Hermès that serves well as a blanket.
Privacy: in the clouds you reach with a box of earplugs. Essential if you are traveling alone and want to isolate yourself. Unless you are willing to listen to the life story of a total stranger. And of course… a paparazzi-proof pair of sunglasses. Together with a book or magazine, the ideal weapon against unwanted conversations and intrusions.
