Waiting for Waldorf

What you do for the first time, you must do well. Buying a designer bag, the first kiss, a flight in a PJ, and also going to New York, you do in style.

The first time in New York

In my case, my overseas deflowering took quite a while. In my twenties, people would ask me whether I had been to New York. When I passed thirty, they would ask when I had last been to New York. The longer I stayed away, the longer it took.

The longer, the better

Compare it to searching for a good restaurant in a foreign city while hungry. The longer you walk in search of the place, the higher your expectations become. A pizza is no longer sufficient, you understand. Such was the case with me and New York. My first encounter had to be top-notch.

From 52st street to Park Av

Fortunately, everything came together. I got to interview Evelyn H. Lauder for Pink Ribbon Magazine and added five days with my love (who had indeed taken a bite out of the Big Apple often). He first booked us a little apartment on 52st street crossing 7th avenue for the real New York feel and then a few nights in the hotel you must have been to.

From Reinout, Mickey, Franklin D. And Al Pacino

Where Reinout asked Daniëlle, where Mickey Rourke filmed that great Bavaria commercial, where a secret train station is located so that presidents (Franklin D. Roosevelt made much use of it) could enter the hotel safely and inconspicuously, the place where for the first time - it was 1921 - a children's menu was served and the place where important scenes from Scent of a Woman, Coming to America, and Weekend at the Waldorf were filmed.

That one sentence

At the moment we stepped into the taxi with our suitcases to move from apartment to luxury room, I paused for a moment. The sentence that would come already felt like one that would mark a historic moment. “Sir, could you take us to the Waldorf Astoria please?”

At least monthly

Really, I could get used to it and I am looking forward to being able to say that sentence regularly in Amsterdam. At least once a month seems like a great recipe to me.
