5X after work still sun on the terrace
As soon as a ray of sunshine shines into our editorial office, we move chairs, benches, and tables outside to work there with our laptop. Sunscreen on the face and get tanned as quickly as possible, please. When our day is done, Liesbeth and I love to rush outside in search of a terrace with sun and then without our computers, but with a glass of something. But where on earth can we still find sun after work? I went on a quest and today I present to you the terraces in Amsterdam that still have sunshine after 6 PM.
This is a very nice café around the corner from the editorial office, so Liesbeth and I often stop by there. Just make sure you have a spot on the street side (not on the bridge side), because there you have plenty of sun. The menu features canned sardines. You think moewah, but I find it delicious.
There you are lovely by the Amstel. You do have to make sure you're not sitting right in front of a tree (there are many trees there), but if you're well positioned, you can sit there for hours and watch the sun sink behind the horizon. Order the crab claws or steak tartare and you won't hear from me again.
Just take the ferry from Central Station to the other side of the IJ. The restaurantis located in the EYE Filmmuseum and has an incredibly large terrace overlooking the IJ. Bring a light jacket, because you can be a bit windy here. Shrimp croquettes or smoked Bawykov salmon are delicious there.
This is a restaurant under the large parking garage of Marnixstraat. Sounds a bit uninviting, but it isn't because there is a huge terrace by the water with many picnic tables or find a spot on the ground by the quay. The menu definitely includes bitterballen and cheese sticks, but it's mainly a Surinamese kitchen and you are obliged to order the Dirty Duck Hoisin Cucumber Spring Rolls or a pastry, and if you really want to do well, you buy a beer from Paramaribo. When the sun goes down, you can also go inside for a dance.
You can here even start early in the morning. Here you have an incredible amount of sun all day long. The best is to score a spot by the window, then you can lean back a bit and, when no one is looking, with your feet up. It's nice to share the Pulpo from the grill. Or oysters. That would make me a happy person.
Next week I will tell you about terraces-with-sun-after-work in Utrecht, The Hague, Haarlem, and Rotterdam. Golden tips can of course be emailed to jet@amayzine.com.
So. I'm going into the sun.
