Does she do it or does she not?

Just at the moment that Liesbeth and I sighed that it had been so long since we had stayed awake over a must-have item (you could call this the height of snobbery)ism we went inside the Dolce & Gabbana store on Corso Venezia for a moment.

The nice thing about the Prada- and Dolce boutique on that street is that they have many items that are only sold on that street. So you really have a collector's item and the idea of being unique is just nice.

We were drawn inside by the handmade dolls in Southern Italian vibes (cost a messy €1400 each but hey, then you do have a doll), but especially by the fruit clutches that were so cheerfully preaching summer in the window. If we could hold them for a moment. Of course we could. And if I could peek at the price, or rather ‘the value’. Now it's not very polite to talk about money but 1 doll equals 2 bags. We rummaged further and saw very cute keychains. Two baby espadrilles tied together with some raffia. Cost: €250 each.

“So that bag is equivalent to three of those little things,” Liesbeth said. That was a true statement.

We decided to take a walk to let the purchase sink in. It's not a classic – it ended up on the ‘don't do it’ list. But it does make you happy all summer long – on the list do it now now now. There is a big there-you-have-her-again-with-that-bag danger had to compete with ‘eand a boring bag never stands out, it can't even get boring.

Actually, we knew from the first second how it was going to turn out. “Potresti portarci al Corso Venezia, per favore?” the words echoed to the taxi driver and before we knew it, I was walking down the street with a big Dolce box.

We are now a day further. The bag has been allowed to sleep on the corner of my bed. While I write this in the breakfast room of my hotel, it sits next to me.

The waitress with a missing tooth just did a few ritual dances around it and a fellow hotel guest looks at me and the bag with a look that is a mix of admiration, deep jealousy, and intense desire.

I am sure: this bag and I, we are going to have a lot of fun together.
