the worst celeb breakups

Every now and then, a celebrity couple breaks up that makes us all go WAT and OMG. There are now rumors swirling that Bey and Jay are splitting up (I don't believe it, just read this).

Now, I am, especially at the office, the most cynical of the group, so it’s not entirely obvious that I’m the one who keeps insisting that it’s true love. But nothing could be further from the truth. Just like I always wholeheartedly believe that some couples will stay together forever, and when that turns out not to be the case, I’m really taken aback. So here it is, the celebrity breakups that we were all really, really upset about.

Bennifer met on the set of their joint film Gigli, which became a gigantic flop. In 2004, film 2, Jersey Girl, was at least as much of a failure. But off-screen, things went much better, and in 2002, Ben gave Jen an engagement ring worth 2.5 million dollars. In September 2003, the couple was supposed to get married, but 4 days before the ceremony, Ben pulled the plug due to “too much media attention.” A few months later, an official press release followed in which the two announced they had split up. Jánken.

Yes, the breakup of breakups. Brad and Jen were our ultimate favorite couple of all time, hands down. And then, then came Angie. Like some kind of evil witch, she disrupted the warm love happiness of America’s sweethearts, and the world broke down in tears. Or rather, the world split into two teams. Team Angie and Team Jen, and of course, I was on the latter team. And now Brad has a rainbow family with Angie, Jen is happily married to Justin, but I, we, and the rest of the world are still dreaming about Brad and Jen, the most beautiful couple ever.

Scott and Kourtney, we hate them and we love them, but mostly we love them. We could follow their relationship quite well in that dreadful program of theirs, and no matter how crazy it all was (his drinking problem, her desire to never sleep together), we still found them the most fun. And then it turned out that after many, many arguments, the cookie was really, really crumbled, and a shock went through the world. Or well, through our editorial team. A good decision for her, that’s fine, but secretly we were quite fond of that silly Scott.

Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson were perhaps one of our favorite couples ever. We really binge-watched their MTV series, Newlyweds, and when it was announced that they were splitting up, our hearts broke. But really. What we saw on screen was true love, we thought, and we will never forget her iconic quote: “is this chicken or is this fish? I know it’s tuna, but is it chicken or fish?” (watch it here again).

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale seemed like a couple that didn’t care about all the hoopla surrounding them and were just very happy together. You didn’t hear much about them, and that’s often good news for a celeb couple. By the way, her wedding ring was designed and made by the Dutch goldsmith Mohan Chandie Shaw, and look, that creates an extra bond. It seems he couldn’t stay with just one woman, and Gwen had enough of that, and we understand that. But Gavin, you were married to Gwen Stefani, why on earth did you need another?

Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green always seemed steady as a rock, and even though you didn’t see much of them, I thought they were great. They were together for 11 years, she was 18 (!) when she met him, and he was 31 at the time. Quite intense, then. They have two children, the youngest is 18 months old and the oldest is 2 years. Maybe they were meant as band-aids for a wound that couldn’t be healed? Whatever the case (they have always been vague about the breakup), I find it a shame.

Jet is still broken about this. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe were the ultimate dream couple. A bit on the level of Brad and Jen. That was of course because of our favorite movie Cruel Intentions, in which they starred (and met each other), but also because they are just so unbelievably good-looking. But in 2007, after 8 years of love, the marriage fell apart, and that broke our hearts. Their statement is related to the fact that they were so young when they met, but there are also persistent rumors about Ryan's infidelities. Whatever the case, it’s a real shame, that’s what it is.
