What we can learn from RuPaul's Drag Race

During a cozy tête-à-tête with my dear (male-loving) boyfriend J, I was told about the reality series RuPaul's Drag Race. Has existed since 2009 (!) and is mostly loved by gays.  Although I am reasonably aware of all the ins and outs of gaylalaland, I didn't know this. The ingredients: a handful of drag queens, a talent show, and a camera, and voila, hysterical television is born. A combination of and a parody on America's Next Top Model and Project Runway, my friend told me. I can't wait to dive into the colorful and glittering world of drag and drama queens. Because one thing is for sure: getting dolled up with these people is pure craftsmanship.

 1. Over the top doesn't exist

I recommend everyone to fill a lazy Sunday with a season or two of Drag Race. An entire hour of drama, glamour, costumes, and especially big egos that don't care about anything or anyone. As long as they become ‘America's Next Drag Superstar’. We can learn something from this attitude, sometimes hesitant little ones. Is your lipstick a bit too bright, your new heels too high for work, or do you dare not wear that crop top because of that one sexy chocolate? I quote from the series: “Girl, whether you're juicy or bony, embrace what you got!” Nothing looks better than confidence.

2. Contour until you weigh an ounce

The opposite sex is not exactly known for its fine face or subtle facial expressions. Neither are the participants of the show. But, at the moment the gentlemen, or uh ladies, get their hands on all the makeup, they transform into true beauty dolls. A narrow nose, high cheekbones, and voluptuous lips. And they create it all just with makeup (okay, some lips have been through the wash with the white coat). This means, dear women, that if we want to go for a completely different nose or lip for once, we only need to work with a brush or pencil. This whole video reveals the makeup metamorphosis from RuPaul's Drag Race. Isn't this Amayyyzine?

3. Work that walk

Those recurring clips in those model races where some girls come onto the runway like farm animals. If only they had watched one episode of this reality show, I am sure they could walk better already. These drags swing their hips as if they aren't even attached to their bodies. They also rock their towering heels as if they are walking in Birkenstocks. I immediately started practicing my own walk (very secretly and with this video).

4. Signature look

I didn't know there were so many different types of drag queens, but this series proves once again the authenticity of people. All participants show a different character, which translates into their enormously theatrical, yet unique looks. What I want everyone to take from this is that it's important to dress from your heart and not from your head. And then we come back to point 1.

The series is available on Netflix.
