Girlfriends
in all shapes and sizes
Sending long letters when you went on vacation, holiday fantasizing together about what the first kiss would be like, hours of calling each other while you saw each other just five minutes ago at school and having identical necklaces. She had one half of the heart and I had the other. As long as I can remember, I've been a girlfriend girl. Still, I am crazy about all the girls around me. And preferably completely different types than I am. My palette of girlfriends is therefore incredibly diverse, but I can't do without any of them. Why? Let me explain.
The entertainer
An entertaining girlfriend is characterized as someone who attracts attention and with whom you never have a dull moment. For me, girlfriend J is the joker of the group. Whether it's because she's an actress by profession or not, wherever I go with her, she puts on a show (whether asked or not). I can't help but enjoy and encourage her to give another burlesque performance at that après-ski bar. Why can't I do without her? ‘A day without laughter...’
The prettiest
Everyone has that one prettiest girlfriend. You don't have to feel intimidated by that at all, no, you just ride along on her shine-wagon. When I'm with girlfriend M , a model and one of my besties, we always get a little more attention and never have to wait in line. Handy, right?
The psychologist
A wise girlfriend is essential for me because sometimes we just need a well-founded second opinion. With girlfriend I, who is also studying psychology, I can talk for hours about the ‘what do I want with my life’ question. When I call her, she always takes a moment to sit down calmly, and we hang on the phone for at least half an hour.
The loyal dog
Those girlfriends who always faithfully listen to your countless stupid mistakes, remember when your anniversary with your boyfriend is (which I often forget myself), and are there at the slightest tear on your doorstep. Girlfriend R is one of those, and for me, the absolute sweetest in the world. We don't see each other very often because she still lives in my hometown. But we hang on the phone daily.
The soulmate
Everyone needs one: the soulmate. Whether it's your partner or your girlfriend, when you're with that person, you actually don't need anyone else. In my case, it's my niece. We can cry, laugh, dance, and gossip together. And we've been together for as long as I can remember. Unconditional love, then.
The party animal
Some girlfriends are just so incredibly good as party buddies. Girlfriend A is always up for a festival, cocktail, or clubbing. She helps me hang up the streamers and even throws in some confetti.
The gay friend
As much as I hate clichés, I have to admit it again in this case. Although I really don't see him as an accessory (he would kill me if I called him that), I find it most enjoyable to talk about men with friend J. It's just a bit different than with your estrogen-filled girlfriends and my straight friends who just say I shouldn't ‘whine’. Yeah, but I just want to tell my story for a moment, okay?
The childhood friend
We played together in the sandbox and still see each other. Childhood friends are great for your self-reflection. With girlfriend A, I regularly share the ‘what was I thinking’ moments from the past, and then we can't stop laughing.
The dreamy one
“But it was meant to be, it's all good,” girlfriend Y says every time. I usually burst out laughing when she comes up with a vague story for me again. But maybe I've secretly learned a bit from her that I shouldn't worry so much about trivial things. Don't tell anyone, okay?
The networker
Girlfriend V is always all over the place. She knows everyone in town and always knows the hottest spots. Very handy, I can tell you.
The stylish one
Then I'm back at the Bijenkorf with four different bags. I always text her all the options, and she often decides. You should cherish girlfriends who help you make such crucial decisions, very much.
And, which girlfriend are you or do you have yourself?
