Amayzine

A week of extremes for our brand new fashion director Simone Dernee. On Wednesday, she toasted during her farewell from Marie Claire to a decade of taste and style, and today she started at the sparkling clean desk at the Amayzine headquarters.

Is there going to be a cork popping off the bottle tonight when you get home?

‘I received a lot of gifts last Wednesday including a lot of bottles of champagne, so a moment to pop those open tonight. Secretly, I already chilled a few bottles this morning. We have a wine climate cabinet at home, but I turn it off on Sunday evenings to discourage drinking during the week. This morning I turned it on and refilled it with the weekend in mind.’

What does your Friday night look like?

‘That’s the only evening that’s somewhat family-oriented during the week. It starts with drinks in the kitchen with tasty snacks (parma ham, cheese cubes, nuts, olives, that kind of thing) and I cautiously start cooking. My son rolls in from hockey and usually has to go straight to the pool for disco swimming. My daughter Cato has a school party tonight, so I enjoy our moment together. By the way, Coen (my husband) and I usually finish that first bottle while cooking.’

I think everyone thinks you spend Saturday shopping...

‘Nooo, my Saturday is a lot less sexy than my ‘weekdays’. Running errands, taking the kids to hockey, and preparing dinner because friends are coming over. I don’t know yet what I’m going to make, but lately, couscous has been a favorite and we usually do something on the barbecue as well. We barbecue all year round and it’s always a success.’

And what do you listen to during such a dinner with friends?

‘I always start with Chet Baker, nice jazzy and calm. We have a Sonos device and that remote control goes from hand to hand, and then it depends on who gets it what’s playing. I can’t get past the new song by Adele Cato already knows it by heart.’

What do you read and watch for inspiration?

‘I always download Volkskrant Magazine and I received the fresh CR (the magazine by Carine Roitfeld) and that inspires me a lot. Furthermore, of course, Instagram and just what I see and observe around me.’

Assuming time, money, and time difference are not an issue, what does your ideal weekend look like?

‘Then I want to have breakfast at Café de Flore, stroll through Saint Germain, shop in the Meatpacking District in the afternoon, have lunch at Pastis, and watch a nice show before eating lobster barefoot in the warm sand at Zest in Curaçao in the evening. I know, Curaçao doesn’t sound incredibly sexy, but really, it’s fantastic there at Zest.’

What do you actually wear on the weekend?

‘Um... My boyfriend jeans with a high waist and rolled-up cuffs from MIH jeans. A cashmere sweater, sneakers from Filling Pieces, and of course my new Jérôme Dreyfuss bag that I got from my lovely Marie Claire colleagues.’

Finally: what time does the alarm go off on Monday?

‘At seven o'clock, then I make breakfast for my children and then I sprint to Amsterdam to shop for a shoot I have on Tuesday.’
