HOW PRETTY, HOW SMART

I remember loving that the prettiest girl in my class was also the dumbest. When someone would say what great thick hair and a beautiful fair skin she had, I would immediately come up with an anecdote.

Where is that mountain?

We had math class and the teacher was trying to explain the Pythagorean theorem to us. “If you want to know how high a mountain is, you can of course climb it and measure every step, but there is also a mathematical formula that allows you to calculate this.” And then he started with his A squared + B squared = C squared formula. At the end of the lesson, the prettiest girl in the class raised her hand. This question had to be asked. “But, where is that mountain then?”

The prettier, the higher the IQ

My friends and I were grateful that the dear Lord had distributed it fairly. They perhaps a bit more beauty, we just a bit more well-functioning brain cells.

But that's not the case at all. Scientific research in England and the US has shown that the IQ of beautiful people is on average 14 points higher than that of less attractive specimens. We also associate physical beauty with greater intelligence, and that is indeed true.

Top models are not dumb

By now, I find it important to mention that many top models are really not dumb. Most have completed HAVO, and while that may not be the highest achievable, considering that they often miss weeks of their school year and spend weekends and evenings on set, it certainly says something about their basic intelligence and commitment.

Studying at the UvA

Moreover, there are many top models with a university degree. Brooke Shields studied at Princeton, Emma Watson studied at Brown University, our own Nimuë Smit studies at the UvA, and there are many more.

Still some justice

And Cameron Russell, for example. Victoria's Secret model who is also studying political science at Columbia University. And you know what else about this Russell? I was moved by her Ted talk. Check it out. That file in front of you can wait another five minutes. In this she tells that models may be the prettiest and slimmest people, but they are also the most insecure people on earth.

Ah, still some justice. Sort of.

Then you will see that pretty, smart, and successful people can also be insecure.

It's just that she's so nice; otherwise, you would almost say that justice exists.
