When I recently grabbed a bag from Morris Nieuwenhuis, he mentioned his BFF Bastiaan van Schaik. “He has such a huge Chanel bag, it's not normal, but it looks so good.” High time to experience that myself and coincidentally I ran into Bas today at restaurant Nacional in Amsterdam. He was wearing a cap from 2F1L, glasses from Saton Optiek, a shirt, from ModeMusthaves , Nike sneakers and on his wrist a watch from Cartier and bracelets from Pig and Hen. But what struck me the most was a funny little bag on his other arm. Chanel. Of course., Tell me, how many designer bags do you have in your closet?.
‘I think about 40.’
‘All Chanel?’
‘No, but I have recently started collecting special Chanel bags. I score them on eBay, so you know it's real. I currently have three, which sounds few, but believe me: it's an expensive hobby.’
‘And is this your latest acquisition?’
‘Yes, a Chanel Bag 2005 designed by Lagerfeld as a successor to the Chanel 1955. I saw this bag on the catwalk in 1997 (also my very first Chanel show ever). It was the first designer bag that had a separate phone pocket, and that was a big thing back then. And this bag also has an ergonomic design, because you can use it as a pillow on the plane.’
‘You are a bit careful with it, right?‘
‘Well, it’s still a bag and not a piece of jewelry, so it has to be practical, but I don’t throw it around.’
‘A pack of cigarettes (and a lighter of course), money, Jo Malone perfume, my iPhone, a charger, and a glasses cloth.’
What is always in your bag?
‘And what is the next piece you are eyeing?’
‘At the moment I don’t really have a bag on my wishlist. Well, a new vintage Chanel 2005 would be nice.’
