This is Koen. Our intern Amayzine International. Ask what a woman should wear this summer and he knows it. Ask what really can't be done anymore and he knows that too. But that's not so strange with his Allround Styling education at Artemis. And it's not weird at all that he also knows very well how to be the best dressed in the editorial team every day. Including bag. And that's what we're going to talk about today. Koen, bring it on…
Tell me, how many designer bags do you have in your closet?
“I have three bags from a “real’ designer. In addition, I also have two from the brand Coach. I thought they were super cool a few years ago, but I'm a bit over them now. Since I saw a photo of Anna Wintour on the internet with the caption: ’Wanna hear a joke? Coach Bags…“ I haven't looked at them again.”
And how did you get this gigantic Balenciaga work bag?
“Received it from my parents on my nineteenth birthday.”
You are very organized, aren't you?
“No way, total chaos. I always try to pack it super organized and neatly, but as soon as I start walking with it, it goes completely wrong. The bag doesn't really have compartments, so all the stuff shifts when you pick it up. That might also be because it's quite large, so I automatically take way too much stuff that I ultimately don't really need.‘
But then you do handle it a bit carefully, right? Or do you just throw it in a corner at home?
“I handle my bags super carefully. They all stand in dustbags neatly in the closet, but the bag I'm using at that moment I immediately throw on a chair (that, yes, not on the floor) when I get home. I take it with me the next day anyway, so it's a bit silly to unpack it completely and put it back in the dustbag.”
You can surely tell what a bag does for a woman.
“I think a bag, along with shoes, is the most important part of an outfit. If you wear an old torn pair of jeans with a super basic white T-shirt but you carry a nice bag and shoes, then your outfit is already made. It also gives you a confident appearance and you are taken more seriously during meetings or while shopping.”
And what about men?
“I think many more men should start wearing designer bags. It's still a bit of a taboo: they often take boring briefcases to work and then you often see them on vacation with a The North Face backpack, really awful. I understand that many men can't go to work with a Chanel, but then buy a classic Ferragamo or Mont Blanc or something like that… Or even a Coach.”
What do you always have with you?
“Always my laptop, an extra battery for my phone, a fragrance (usually Hermès Voyage or Guerlain Homme), a bottle of water, my wallet, keys, an ABN reader, Smint mints, and a hand sanitizer that I bought at Kitson in LA that says: “Maybe you touched your genitals.” Hilarious.”
And? Do you have another one on your wishlist?
“Are you kidding? My wishlist knows no end. I definitely want to have every bag from Saint Laurent. Also a Louis Vuitton Sac Plat, a huge Birkin, a Goyard Saint Louis, and my ultimate dream is a Louis Vuitton suitcase that I will use as a coffee table for coffee table books. Last year I came across one at a vintage market in Saint Tropez with my initials on it. It was meant to be, but unfortunately, that's going to take some saving, about ten years…”
