With Amsterdam Fashion Week as the kick-off, the coming weeks are all about the shows. For the traveling fashionista, it mainly means making brain-wracking decisions: what will be my look of the day and what will I take with me?
Before NY, Milan, and Paris, there is first a general and home game in Amsterdam. Unlike the other fashion cities, most shows in Amsterdam are located in one place, which makes me prefer to choose fabulous instead of functional. After all, you don't have to rush from one side of the city to the other, which is often the case with the shows in Milan and Paris. Painful feet are usually spared.
Then the next dilemma: am I sitting front row, have they shuffled me somewhere to the middle, or worse: do I have to stand? You understand, I won't be awkwardly wobbling on my Louboutins if I'm crammed in somewhere. If I'm sitting front row, it means an extra reason for existence for my high-heeled friends (and myself).
In the most disappointing case, you don't belong to the chosen ones with an invitation at all. Fortunately, there is the phenomenon of street style that gives everyone the chance to shine in the spotlight. Strolling outside and around the shows in the hope of being photographed has certainly become just as important in recent years, and anyone who looks original and a bit trendy can make it onto the fashion map.
What you wear depends on various factors. For now, I won't come close to a Paris Hilton or Anna Wintour; I don't have a private driver who drops me off at the entrance so I can shine in a too-thin dress without a coat at minus ten. But you're a fashionista or you're not, and if you are, you definitely don't want to blend in anonymously with the crowd. So:
1 What you wear must at least have something to do with fashion
2 It should radiate a bit more glamour than your normal daily way of dressing
3 During fashion weeks, it's fun to experiment a bit more with colors and combinations
4 Preferably, you wear something from the latest collection (especially regarding bags and/or shoes), unless you're wearing good vintage
5 And most importantly: whatever you wear must be your own personal style and not give the impression of a dressed-up doll
